St. Valentine’s Day is the most popular day for couples to become engaged. It is heart warming to consider all the people who committed to take their relationship to the next level yesterday. For brides who may pause to bask in the engagement glow or for brides who are already pouring over bridal magazines, arguably one of the first important steps to getting started is considering what type of wedding it will be.

At Sea Bags, admittedly we have a special fondness for all things nautical. It is in that spirit that I offer three aspects to consider when planning a wedding with a nautical flair.

Add water. This suggestion is not to infer that planning a wedding is like mixing a pitcher of kool-aid. It is more involved than adding water and stirring rigoriously. But a nautical wedding should include water in the form of pond, ocean, lake or river. It doesn’t have take place on that body of water but it should have a view (even if it is a peek between trees or through window pane) and ideally a fresh aroma (even if from a scented candle) for ambiance of being by the water. Beach and sand are optional.

navy anchorAnchor yourself. The symbolism of an anchor is perfect for a wedding. The image represents a particularly stable or grounding relationship. It is easy to incorporate this emblem of hope at your wedding through favors and centerpieces. Our bucket bag adorned with a navy anchor looks great hosting a flower vase as a centerpiece or being carried by a darling flower girl tossing petals from it or use it to welcome out-of-town guests by loading it with essentials.

Customize. Don’t compromise your personal style or the expression of your love. Consider customizing totes made from recycled sails for the bridal party. More than the subjective promise of a bridesmaid dress than can be worn again, these totes will be treasured and used for years to come. Let your creative flair show with your favorite colors or wedding date or even longitude/latitude degrees of your ceremony.

bucket bag with flowersCongratulations to newly engaged couples. Maine is a great place to be married. Even if you cannot make it to the Pine Tree State, let Sea Bags add just the right nautical touch. It would be an honor for our products to be a part of your special day. Call us. We love weddings.

<![CDATA[Custom Bags: Zip code]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/zip-code/ In 1963, the US Postal Service developed a numbering system to help with the increased volume of mail that was being distributed. Zip codes starting with the number "0" indicated areas in the northeast, while zip codes starting with the number "9" indicated areas in the northwest.

Along came the drama series 90210 in the fall of 1990, and we could all identify with our zip code. The show was based on a family that relocates to Beverly Hills from the midwest. The show made zip codes chic. We think people identify with zip codes & it is proven by the number of requests we get to add them to a custom designed bag. Below are examples. We can add zip codes in a number of ways, in a number of colors & on diffent sizes of our tote bags.

<![CDATA[A View From Bow Street: Sailed Around the World, Recycled in Maine]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/authentic-sail-details-on-ur-bag/ Character counts

At our Freeport store, I want to be sure that each person who visits is made aware of two important things: 1) all of our bags are made from recycled sailcloth – not canvas; and 2) all of our bags are made in Maine. Luff on 5

Sailed Around the World, Recycled in Maine. A close look around our store reveals special characteristics of retired sails that cannot be replicated in canvas –besides the fact that canvas becomes heavy when wet and is much slower to dry than Dacron.

Our store is full of subtle and unique features. Recently we have made quite a few bags designed with a bit of luff showing. The luff is the vertical edge of the sail, which runs alongside the mast. Luffing occurs when a sailing vessel moves too close into the wind and causes the sails to flap. The luff, a strong part of the sail, is a fuzzy fabric that feels like felt. Because we utilize as much of the used sail as possible, it is a treat to have a sail panel cut with the luff showing.

Tell tail of luckThe tell-tail (or tell-tale) is my favorite feature on some sails. It is a tiny dot that holds a “tail” of string or ribbon in place on a sail. Depending on the location on the sail, the flapping tail can mean different things. For example, it is my understanding that a spiraling tell-tail indicates incorrect airflow on that side of the sail. We think they are a sign of good luck and we make the effort to incorporate them in our bags when possible.

Logos have become status symbols on purses and totes. It is a little different for us at Sea Bags. Whenever possible and appropriate, we cut retired sails and even big drawstring bags that carry sails into panels that include the logo of the sail company. And that is as cool as it is authentic.

Status logo

Not everyone notices these details. Some people question them. But these are subtle examples of Sea Bag’s authentic designs and commitment to repurposing sails when it comes to handcrafting style forward totes and accessories.

<![CDATA[From Around the Shop: Introduction and Tour of Sail Loft]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/it-is-a-tanbark-thing/ Introduction to From Around the Shop: It is a Tanbark-thing!

shades of tanbark A recent trip to the sail loft above our “shop” on Custom House Wharf was quite revealing. Mysteriously the loft defies the law of physics that proves heat rises. Behind a thick curtain and up the narrow staircase, there is an extensive collection of sails chilling like fine wine.

Despite the overwhelming appearance, I did notice an organizational system to the bounty of used sails stacked on industrial shelves. The rainbow spectrum of spinnaker material is along the right wall. On top of the billowing mounds of Dacron, there are rolls and rolls of criss-crossed Kevlar.

tanbark on bench

To the left where the afternoon sun pours through the window, I saw a pile of panels in hues ranging from rustic brick to the lighter shades of a faded picnic table. I had discovered (maybe not “discovered” but it was new to me) Tanbark in the sail loft.

The unique Tanbark color was achieved by submerging the sails in tannins which is a compound usually derived from tree bark. During the days of canvas sails, the process was used to protect the sails from rot, mold and mildew. Tanbark is a nostalgic color and a charming look that represents the essence of cruising under sail.

tanbark duffle on shoulder

Now Dacron sails can be dyed this color. These panels in our loft were cut from retired sails used on large teaching vessels such as schooners or sloops.

Tanbark is not only aesthetically pleasing, but the color reduces glare, and the dye pigment offers improved UV protection over a natural shade. The finish is a medium firm with high quality weaves. The cloth is only available in the heaviest of weights so there isn’t much interest among modern racers/cruisers.

tanbark duffle carried

I am among the first to admit that Tanbark sailcloth makes a handsome and rugged bag. The reddish brown color reminds me of a rustic sunset and the look adds an historical affect to a modern material.

What aspects of life on Custom House Wharf or manufacturing at Sea Bags have you always wondered about?

<![CDATA[A View From Bow Street: Elmer Fudd Called And Wants His Hat Back]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/winter-hat-trend/ Elmer Fudd called and he wants his hat back

From the window overlooking Bow Street, I have noticed that there is something going on with winter hats. We are witnessing a millinery trend that starts with Elmer Fudd and his hat. Since 1937 this eggheaded character has forgone fashion for the ability to untie the side flaps that protect his ears when hunting wabbits.

Wacky skiing hats are also popular on these streets of fashion. There is a love-hate following to these hats with spikes or wiry projectiles expressing the reckless abandonment and “look at me” attitude that allegedly one gets from downhill skiing.

Now the third element of my winter hat evolution hasn’t appeared in Freeport –yet- but has had an impact nevertheless: the Fascinator of the royal wedding of 2011. Remember the sudden fascination with these ridiculously fabulous Fascinator hats?

It is my belief that elements of Elmer Fudd, skiing, and Fascinators have combined to create the look that is now known as the mad bomber hat. Children are cute in the critter versions with little ears on the top and colored pom-poms on the end of the elongated earflap strings. On a retail website, the blonde model looks good wearing a silver metallic quilted version with “polyester satin lining and faux fur trim…Snap tab secures under chin.”

Other than these two examples, it is my observation that few people look good in this type of hat. But then perhaps, in the tradition of Elmer Fudd, appearance is no longer relevant. Could it be that style has been overruled by the practicality of keeping your ears warm?

I don’t think so either. It is about individual style. Even in muted colors these bomber hats are bold and demand attention. These hats are fun loving and whimsical. Looking good may not be a top priority, but the pay off is another form of creative expression. And let us not forget the well-earned head of hat hair once the millinery oddity is removed.

Forget the earmuffs and never mind head wraps. Now is the time to embrace winter freedom and let the flaps fall as the may as we marshal forward with warm ears. And, above all, this is a good way to guarantee that you won’t take yourself too seriously!

If interested, here is an instructional video on making your own bomber hat.

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: Can't We All Just Get Along?]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/power-or-sail-all-good/ Can't We All Just Get Along?

A kind looking woman visited the store recently. She immediately identified herself as a boater and took interest in our vast selection of totes. I explained how easy it is to have a clasp added to the tote of her choice or how we could make a bag with a zipper if that was her preference.

We talked about our shared loved of pockets. And agreed that pockets are like closets, you can never have too

many of them. I showed her our “baby bag” style of tote with six pockets and metal clasp.

Suddenly the conversation turned quiet. After a pregnant pause, she asked if I had a bag with powerboats on it instead of the primary colored tiny sailboats that decorated the bag we were admiring seconds ago.

This was the first time I became aware of the Hatfields/McCoys aquatic feud between power boaters and sail boaters. She admitted, “I could not possibly carry a bag with a sailboat on it.”

The change in the woman’s demeanor and her adamant refusal of a sailboat image made me curious about the origin of her attitude. With a little informal research, I found that boaters do favor either one type or the other and often hold some perceptions (valid or not) about the “Other.” It is rare to find a person like myself –referred to as bi-boaters or transvesselites*- with “oars” in both boating worlds.

It comes down to a matter of personal preference on what type of experience is sought after leaving the dock. Powerboats with shallower drafts provide greater access to shallower water and can get closer to the beach. Whereas, sailboats -relying primarily on harnessing the wind - can offer an unlimited range of quiet travel. There is no wrong answer. I would not refuse either.

Anyway, the woman decided to customize her own version of the pocketed “baby bag”. We agreed that a durable, domestically manufactured bag made from recycled sailcloth with an overt nod to nautical lifestyle is the best accessory of all – no matter what type of boating experience you prefer.

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: Don't Fear White]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/care-4-sea-bag/ Don’t Fear White: The Love and Care of a Sea Bag

I was given my first Sea Bag as a gift from my girlfriend. I immediately liked the pristine white Dacron sailcloth in contrast to the nautical, bold graphic number 5 on the front. The white hand-spliced rope added to the crisp appearance. It is a style smart look.

Now some customers tell me that they worry about being able to keep the white totes clean. There is nothing to fear, I reassure them.

Character Verses Flaws. Sea Bags maintains its commitment to using recycled materials, so that means that there are many different shades of white. It is a proud moment for me to help people understand that repurposed sails come with character - not blemishes or flaws.

Continue the Journey. Part of the fun of carrying a Sea Bag is knowing that you are continuing the journey of a sail that has carried its boat and crew over the seas and is now carrying your books, gear or groceries ashore.

Showroom New. Now that we have adjusted our definition of what it means to be showroom new, here are some of the ways I care for my bags –that have white handles and do not have metallic accents.

  • A couple times a year I soak the WHITE handles in a bleach and water mixture. I put the solution in a cookie sheet with an inch or so depth and submerge the handles. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Spot clean trouble spots with liquid dish soap.
  • Toss the bag in the washing machine and use usual laundry detergent. Your choice on water temperature and cycle. Cold water is fine on SOAK or DELICATE cycle depending on your washing machine. I usually use something warmer because I am tougher on my bags. (THIS HINT IS ONLY FOR BAGS WITHOUT METALLIC DETAILS.)
  • During the summer, I like to take the bag with me into the surf and soak it bag in sea water for awhile because I find that this helps clear out the nook-and-crannies before putting it into the washer as described above.
  • Hang to dry

Don’t fear the white. Instead embrace the white Dacron as your canvas and your opportunity to make this bag a part of your lifestyle.

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: January White Sail!]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/white-sail/ OUR JANUARY WHITE SALE SAIL!

The new year is off to a bright and chilly start. We see the return of the puffy coat and fur lined parkas out of our window to Bow Street in Freeport. Children gather at the bus stop surrounded by billowing clouds of their own breath. It is the type of weather that once you are inside a house and you realize that you have forgotten something in the car, there is a moment or two of self-searching and weighing just how badly you need that item, given the effort and breath-stealing chill involved in retrieving it. We become a lot more organized with our trips to the car, or anywhere outside, this time of year.

Freeport has returned to its winter self. It is quiet. Jingle bells and the clopping of the horse drawn carriage no longer competes with the street noise. Given that we are an outdoor shopping mecca, shoppers now stay bundled up and walk briskly usually with their coffee cups held close to their bodies for attempted warmth.

Even though January has been traditionally the time for White Sales developed as a boring tactic to keep linen makers in business during this slow time of year, here at Sea Bag’s we are the unofficial home of the White Sail and there is nothing boring about it!

RED STAR BAG

Stepping into the Sea Bags store is an instant reminder of warmth and fun. Against the white of recycled Dacron, our designs are as robust as they are functional. A red star medium tote carried on the shoulder of a bright green puffy coat -or leopard print carcoat - is just as refreshing now as it was a few months ago, and just as stylish as it will be on a cotton sleeve this summer.

We enjoyed a busy holiday season. Countless Sea Bags are now debuting as part of the new January White Sail. Each bag holds its own unique character based a commitment to reusable resources and with a distinguished nautical flair.

Employee Gift Ideas from Around The Shop!

When employees were asked to recommend holiday gift ideas, it did not take long to build our dream list. We joke that it has been said that working for Sea Bags unofficially requires “being edgy” or pushing the limits in creativity, attitude or even attire. And, overall, we embrace that description.

We love being a part of repurposing sails into style smart products. We started last Friday by offering a different “edgy” and unique gift idea each day. Please remember quantities and special prices are wicked limited. If you haven't seen the list yet, check it out.

Simplify! With all the wine tote designs to choose from, Nicola immediately favored the simplicity of this inked stamp graphic because it reminds her of the color of red wine. Recommendation = Red Wine Tote.

Indulge! Beth, Sea Bags President, visited our neighbors at Harbor Fish to find the perfect to our bucket bag. Enjoy fresh picked lobster meat as a special treat for this holiday season. Recommendation: Red claw bucket bag with 1lb of lobster meat.

Dirigo! As a native Mainer, Amy promotes the Maine version of Monopoly placed inside our large tote with a silhouette of the Pine Tree State. Recommendation = Maine large tote with board game

Hands-Free. Sari created a product with unisex appeal using adjustable navy blue strap that can be worn cross-body. Close the bag by tossing over the flap for instant, practical style. Recommendation = Navy Star Messenger Bag

Protect! Sokunthy, who is pursuing her Masters Degree, keeps her essential laptop safe in her over stuffed backpack by keeping it in a computer case. The case is lined with sturdy, recycled sailing foam. Recommendation = Laptop/iPad case
Around the Shop, we enjoy the freedom to create, design, and produce a functionally unique recycled product. The items on our holiday recommendation list reflects some of our best work.
Ho Ho Ho! Happy Hanukkah! Merry Christmas!

<![CDATA[A View to Bow Street: Breaking through the Holiday Shopping Membrane]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/okay-to-buy-4-yourself/ For years, I have carried a mantle of guilt while thinking that I was the only one afflicted with a serious shopping condition. It has been cathartic and somewhat validating to witness other people breaking through the same shopping membrane in order to effectively begin the holiday gift-giving season.

The condition is the overwhelming urge to buy something for yourself instead of buying for others. It is feeling that arises when starting to shop for the holidays. Symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • • Accelerated heartbeat in freshly stocked stores;
  • • Lazer-like focus even when the selection is vast; or
  • • Sweaty palms when products are priced to move.
  •

Several women –who have asked to remain anonymous - have admitted to sharing this condition and have sheepishly acknowledged feeling guilty about it. If untreated, I have seen that the side effects can lead to wandering aimlessly through stores and flipping endlessly through racks while the seasonal retail world races by.

It is important to recognize this feeling for what it is and have the willingness to work through it. This doesn’t mean that we have forgotten that it is better to give than to receive. It doesn’t imply that we haven’t forgotten that it is the thought that counts.

I am the last person to stage an intervention that may keep a woman from a good deal on something that she wants. Instead, I provide the support to reach a compromise so that progress can be made on the entire gift list.

My advice is to go ahead and break the Holiday Shopping Membrane. Buy something nice for yourself. Take advantage of the good selection and sale prices. Then you will feel good about moving forward and shopping for all the loved ones on your holiday list.

And, remember, you are not alone!

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/sea-bags-reinvents-giftwrap/ SEA BAGS SHOPPING BAGS REINVENT RECYCLED GIFT-WRAP shopping gift bags

During each transaction in the store, an interesting dilemma arises. When the customer gets the receipt and is handed her or his Sea Bag purchase. This moment typically goes in one of the following ways:

    • Customer asks, “Do you have a shopping bag?”
    • Customer offers, “I don’t need a bag, I can put it (the purchase) in this other bag.”
    • Customer observes, as their purchase becomes its own shopping bag.

As a company committed to sustainable practices, we have resisted the idea of paper shopping bags even made from recycled paper. But we still had the dilemma over offering an appropriate shopping bag for purchases. Luckily the colorful solution was stockpiling before us and the epiphany arrived in time for the holiday season.

SHOPPING BAGS MADE FROM SPINNAKER! This is the type of sail that fills with wind and balloons out in front of the boat, referred to as flying.

We saw our piles of lighter weight nylon spinnaker as the chance for shopping bags and another way to reuse this resource. Think about it. The shopping bags, made from brightly colored, recycled spinnaker, are intended to double as giftwrap and be used long after the holiday season. Win-Win!

Many of us seek an alternative to the traditional ripping and crinkling of decorated paper and try to reduce the waste associated with traditional holiday giftwrap. Even after the gift is given, the packaging can be used again and again.

Shopping bags are available with purchase in Freeport and Portland.

Photo: Lance was the first to purchase a shopping bag to wrap his mother’s gift. As a mariner, he agreed that it was a “great idea.”

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: What is better than chocolate?]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/chocolate/ A View from Bow Street: What is Better than Chocolate?

According to my sweet tooth, there is little better consumable product than chocolate. Naturally my interest was piqued when I learned about this year’s holiday promotion partnering chocolate with Sea Bags. But when it was clear that Kate Shaffer, recently named one of North America’s Top Ten chocolatiers by Dessert Professional Magazine, authored the book being sold with a special designed bucket bag, I knew it was a delicious homerun for me as well as all avid chocolate lovers.

Two Stars of Maine. Let me explain.
    book and bucket
One of the Stars refers to the gold metallic star design on our bucketbag. Note that this is different than the silver starred bucket bag listed separately among our holiday products. A closer look at the gold metallic design reveals that the stitching around the star looks like chocolate- at least it does to me. We used a natural thread with a brown hue. It looks yummy with the gold; think chocolate covered caramel.

Our bucket bag size is a nice alternative to the wine bag for small gift giving. I have seen women use it as a purse carrying essentials and with enough space for hat and gloves. And, of course, it is the right size to give a book or gourmet chocolates which brings me to…

The second Star in this partnering is Kate’s new book, Desserted: Recipes and Tales from an Island Chocolatier (Down East). Imagine a collection of over 30 delicious recipes - lavishly illustrated with 50 full color photographs- for chocolates and other popular items from their seasonal café on Isle au Haut, Maine. My only suggestion for the book’s next printing would be to revisit the “literary” technology and include scratch-and-sniff patches.

My family and I have visited the island café where Kate and her husband produce Black Dinah Chocolates. Their kitchen combines amazing natural ingredients to create exotic chocolate flavors. Kate’s recipes offer useful tips and detailed instructions not only for making chocolates, but for incorporating chocolate into a variety of sweet and savory dishes.

    You are invited.
    photo of author
Kate will be signing copies of her book on Friday, November 25 in our Portland location, 25 Custom House Wharf from 2-4pm. Another opportunity to meet Kate is at Sea Bags at 6 Bow Street in Freeport on Sunday, November 27 from 11am-1pm. Her chocolates will be available at both locations, too.

If you cannot attend, please check out Two Stars from Maine (book and bucket) on our website. What is better than chocolate anyway?

<![CDATA[A View From Bow Street: Does this bag make me look fat...and other ways women communicate differently]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/sample-sale-Black-Friday/ Women communicate (AND SHOP) differently even in the Moonlight

As soon as we decided to offer the buy-a-bag-get-a-bag-50% (a.k.a. BOGO) sale during GirlFriends’ Getaway Weekend, we were not concerned about how to promote it. We know women communicate differently even when it comes to shopping. We told some of our best girlfriends, such as Chrystie Corns, Kelly Edwards and a few others. It wasn’t long before we started receiving phone call inquiries too.

We know that women are from Venus and men are from another planet*. But here on Bow Street, we also know that women communicate differently as it relates to the thrill of the retail hunt. Here are some unscientific, yet proven differences:

Bargain hunting as a pack verses lone wolf. One of my favorite sights is a group of women heading up the stairs to the store. Generally they subtly resemble each other and usually share a short-handed common language. They will point out styles to each other because they know each other’s preferences.

Whereas, men gather on benches or lean against railings but rarely have I seen a similar configuration of men shopping together.

Covert savings verses sharing the wealth. When seeking a sale item, men park in fifteen minute parking spaces, enter the store, locate the desired item, purchase and depart quickly. Occasionally, they may be temporarily distracted by an end cap display but usually the cost savings shopping is conducted as a covert mission.

Whereas, while seeking the sale item, women multi-task by surveying the surroundings. Armed with a smart phone and a finely tuned girlfriend sonar, they text, call and even take snap shots of items to share the wealth of a good sale.

Moonlight Madness verses Midnight Madness. Moonlight is a kinder, gentler way of describing a killer sale that starts at midnight. In Freeport, we will open our doors at 12:00am (until 4:00am), Friday, November 25 for our 3rd Annual SAMPLE SALE. We have been collecting bags all year for this 40% off merchandise sale. The SAMPLE SALE is like the Bargain Bin on steroids! Women know to shop early for the best selection. Portland opens (Freeport reopens) at 8am and continues the discount until 2pm that day.

Whereas, men often prefer March Madness over the idea of shopping in the middle of the night no matter how large the discount. An exception may be on high priced ticket items but even then the experience is not usually discussed in the light of day.

This is one of my favorite pictures of girlfriends shopping. Jessica (left) -the bag sojourner – brought Shelly, who was visiting from The Volunteer State, into the store. It was not long before Shelly became a Sea Bags believer!

<![CDATA[Custom Bags: We've Got Your Number]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/gotnumbers/ "We've Got Your Number.." is a phrase we often use to describe our Single Digit Totes. The Single Digit Tote is inspired by the numbers on racing sails.

Numbers can mean something different to each individual, whether it is a birthday, a significant date, a specific latitude/longitude, or favorite number in a favorite color. We can make numbers in many colors, at different angles, and in many styles. No matter what your number might be, we can do it

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: The Bell Tolls for Sails!]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/ring-the-bell/

Ringing the Bell for Traded Sails

We recently added new signage to the Freeport store. The signs above the front and back doors more closely match the sign at Custom House Wharf, our manufacturing site and company headquarters. Normally this change would go by unnoticed, but we have a little something that the wharf does not.

    We have a bell!

Next to the backdoor sign that reads “We Trade Bags for Sails” there is the bell. We get excited –almost giddy- when a person comes in to trade a sail for a bag and rings the bell.

It is difficult to explain our feeling of recycling a sail. Our bell ringing is the combination of an angel getting its wings and when a bartender rings the bar bell acknowledging a generous tip. Have you ever been in a bar when this has happened? People look when they hear the bell. The customer receives recognition for being a good tipper, and thus encouraging remaining clientele to seek the same reward by tipping generously.

It is similar to that. The bell rings when some generous soul brings in a sail for us to recycle, and trade for a bag! We celebrate that the old sail will continue its journey as part of a Sea Bag instead of rotting in a storage unit or worse, being hauled to a landfill.

We trade bags for sails. As my eight-year old son would say, the process is easy-peasy. No formulas or pound restrictions. Sail = Bag. Simple.

Try it. Bring in an old sail. Leave with a bag or plans for a custom bag and be ready to ring the bell! Don’t be shy. Our neighbors are getting used to the sound. And we all celebrate the ability to recycle and reuse such a resource.

Mia shows the 'thumbs up" on her easy experience of bringing in an old sail and leaving with her Bag!

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: Hurry Up St. Nick!]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/you-are-going-to-love-holiday-designs/ Ever wonder why retailers start the holiday season earlier and earlier each year?

I am a very good shopper with a keen sense of retail happenings. I have noticed, as many of you have, as Christmas began sneaking into Thanksgiving and when Halloween merchandise first debuted in September. Recently, have you noticed how Thanksgiving has started to co-exist with Halloween because of the shared pumpkin?

Now that I am happily embedded in the retail world of Sea Bags located in the shopping mecca of Freeport, Maine I can better understand how the rush to the Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza season happens.

Okay…ready? Here it is. From the perspective of a locally owned company headquartered on a working waterfront wharf, the reason why holiday decorations and products are appearing earlier and earlier is because WE ARE EXCITED!

Our holiday timeline is based loosely on the Santa Workshop model. Right now our unique seasonal items, designed by our brightest minds gathered around the worktable in the production area, are being handcrafted on Custom House Wharf by talented sewers –albeit not elves.

Yesterday a customer came into the store looking for our holiday stockings that she loved last year. It is a good thing that I didn’t have any holiday samples on hand because I was so excited to show her this year’s designs that I may have sold them to her a week before Halloween!

The truth is that since I saw the holiday lineup I have been slowly decorating the store in anticipation of throwing open the doors of Santa’s Workshop so everyone can enjoy our classic designs and recycled seasonal items. Our motive to start the holiday as soon as possible derives from excitement to share these products with our cherished customers, new and old!

Now I am left to wonder why Presidents’ Day cannot get enough traction to challenge Valentines Day for its hold on retail space in January and February…Anyone?

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Rainy Day Fashions]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Rainyday/ Dressing can be more of a challenge when it's a rainy day. There are many things to consider, from the type of materials you can wear (suede being an obvious NO-NO) to staying dry without sacrificing style. Don't worry, you don't have to let the dreary weather put a damper on you, your mood, or fashion! Dressing well when it rains requires a little more planning and smart shopping. With the essential fowl weather gear, staying fashionable despite the elements is easy and fun.

First, I would recommend a great pair of rubber Wellies (boots). I can't think of anything worse than wet, soggy, socks and shoes. There are may varieties of rain boots out there to choose from. Though it may be temping to try a polka-dots, bright red, or hot pink pairs of boots, I would highly suggest that you resist this urge. Get yourself a pair of classic black, navy or hunter green boots that will go with a lot of different outfits.

Next Invest in a classic trench coat and/ or rain slicker. Again, I would steer clear of all the overly bright garb and stick to a classic khaki, grey or black that can be worn with a multitude of outfits. I would also consider yellow a classic rain coat color. Just keep in mind your usual apparel - if you are fairly sporty then yellow could really work. Remember, you can always add a second coat to your collection in a fun color if you find yourself using the wet weather gear frequently.

Finally, make sure your coat has a hood or buy a hat to keep the water off your face. A lot of people us umbrellas to keep the water at bay. If you are one of them, basic black is always the best color option. I don't usually use an umbrella, I find them to be more of a nuisance than helpful. Going umbrellaless is fine too....just don't forget to make sure your bag/purse is at water-resistant and can protect your belongings temporarily.

<![CDATA[It Takes a Village]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Village/ Last week we took a day to reflect and recharge. Its hard to find a day, to find the time, and a location that sparks creativity and reflection but on October 13th, magic happened. Here are the top lessons learned (in no particular order).

    1) You get out what you put in. The days (and weeks) of prep were worth it.

    2) Our team is amazing and all good at their jobs. It takes asking someone who does the job to know how to improve it. The ideas were smart and insightful.

    3) Its so easy to get bogged down in day-to-day that you can forget to look forward. Looking forward keeps us moving.

    4) Inspiration comes from everywhere: from a beautiful house, a beautiful coast and even a rainy day.

    5) Team building comes from a meal, a project, or a car-pool and does not have to be a planned event.

    6) I love my life, my job, my state and my co-workers.

    7) I can never say thanks enough. Its always in my head but it wouldn't hurt me to say it aloud more.

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: Vocabulary Primer]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/vintage/

We make bags from sailcloth referred to as “vintage.” Every industry/business has its special own vocabulary. So it is easy for me to understand how it can be confusing when we mention these bags or refer to this style on our website.

    vintage totes

Our vintage bags –just as all our bags- have been previously sailed. The difference is that they share certain characteristic numbers or logo design from the original sail. As you may know, Sea Bags manufacturing is based on environmental sustainability in terms of reusing, recycling and repairing rather than throwing things away. For us the word Vintage is less about the length of existence or age; but rather it refers to the type of sailcloth from which the bag is made.

Some vintage sailcloth has been sailed longer than others. In the store we encourage customers to feel the texture of each bag. It is part of the character that extends beyond a particular style. It is interesting to consider when working with vintage sailcloth, we cannot predict the color or digits that will be available when designing your duffel bag, sea sack or tote. That variable is part of the journey that many customers prefer.

Our bags are crafted from retired sails with Dacron as the base. Whereas, contemporary designs are lovingly added to some bags, our vintage totes boast graphics from the original sail manufacturer.

Admittedly the word vintage caught my attention because I am more sensitive to the term as I age. For example, those of us who experienced formidable years during the 80s are now also considered vintage. However, I prefer to think of it in Sea Bags lingo as sun-sealed, unique and original. Otherwise, that is a different blog topic entirely!

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Bows are Back!]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Bows/ Not since the infamous Sam & Libby bowed ballet flat days, of the early 80's, have I seen so many bows! Not only are they popping up on shoes, but on jackets, shirts, skirts, belts, handbags and also jewelry.

They are a great way to add a feminine touch to any outfit and bows are a timeless accessory. Bows come in so many different shapes, sizes and styles. Bows can also be wonderful accessory for your hair - clip and headband bows are an elegant and classic way to top off your hair-do!

So, next time you feel the need to add a little something to your outfit, why not try tying on a beautiful bow!

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: Saying Good-Bye to Summer]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/bye-bye-summer/

There is no denying it. Summer is over. In Maine we don’t allow Labor Day or the start of the school year dictate the end of summer. We unofficially annex September and have been known to feel entitled to summer-like (albeit while wearing more layers for warmth) activities through Columbus Day weekend. But that is pushing it.

Whisper light sundresses and shoulder baring blouses are being packed away. And it is just a matter of time before it is puffy coat season. Good-bye bare legs and sun-kissed cheeks. Hello opaque tights, lip balm and moisturizer.

It was a good summer. In Freeport we met so many friendly and funny people. Countless Sea Bags were launched from here on Bow Street to a life on the beach, service on the boat, or hauling at camp. We are told how well traveled our bags are throughout the world. Our bags have also entered the workforce by making the daily commute, carrying produce from the farmers market, or keeping track of library books or class folders. Each bag represents the best of Maine and reflects the unique character of its owner.

We enjoy four distinct seasons in Maine. So, as we bid summer adieu, we are gearing up for all that is good about fall and winter. But I have a secret to share on how to cope with short days and long nights come January or February. Use your Sea Bag. Yes. That's it. You will notice it is like hanging out with an old friend that conjures warm memories and the promise that summer will return soon.

Do you carry your Sea Bag all year?

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Coat of Armor]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Armor/ The hottest coat trends for winter 2011 include bold color, dramatic prints, and beautiful design details. Weather you are looking for a new winter coat or just an alternative to your usual blah coat. This is definitely a good season to invest in that chic coat you've been longing for. Personally I love shopping the vintage stores they usually have an amazing selection of different coats and outer wear.

In fact most of my own coats I have accumulated though out the years; I have collected from vintage and used clothing stores. Going about searching for a coat the vintage way is not always the easily because it definitely takes a lot of time and most importantly determination. In the quest for a coat you should be looking for bold shades, unique prints, edgy cuffs, detailed stitching and metallic accents.

Most of us gravitate to the basic black coat that is way the easiest update is to add color. Don't hesitate to brighten up your wardrobe and your life by wearing a winter coat in a mood lifting color. Going bold with red, bright yellow, royal blue or emerald green means you should avoid overly ornate designs. Keep it simple and let the bold color be the focal point. So get out of those pre-winter blahs because winter does not have to be boring especially when you spice it up with a gorgeous new or new to you coat!

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: What Is and Is NOT Trending on Bow Street]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/trends/ What is and IS NOT trending right now on Bow Street

Throughout the world there are streets that conjure images of couture and legends of sophistication; Fifth Avenue in New York City or Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Get ready to add another street to that prestigious list. Our own Bow Street in Freeport. We have trends occurring here in our little corner of the world.

I have to be clear upfront. We are not much for fads here. Fads have a tendency to scream; whereas trends are soft spoken and require paying attention when you have to lean in to catch the details.

Eli adds safety pins to his tshirt

Trending: Eli from Brooklyn. Eli and his family came into the store in late August. His mother loved the bags. His father was a good sport (see How Dudes Do Sea Bags). And his brother and sister were scanning the store for ways to spend their remaining allowance. But Eli was checking the texture and structure of the bags.

As I answered his questions about the origin of the sailcloth and whether the bags could carry a bunch of bricks, I noticed something shining on Eli’s shoulder. With a closer look, I could tell that there was a line of small safety pins on each shoulder of his weathered navy t-shirt. Totally unique.

His mother explained that days earlier Eli had the idea to add some metal to his shirt. She helped him pin the objects creating texture and structure to an ordinary graphic tee. I thought, with the pins secured to prevent accidental injury, totally cool.

Trending: Rope bracelets live on. People, who remember rope bracelets from their childhood, love them. We put them on at the beginning of summer and only cut them off when heading back to school. Usually by that time, the bracelets were soiled with summer adventure and left a peculiar tan line. Well, now that the season is changing and the sleeve lengths are lowering, many folks are keeping them on their wrists. This trend acknowledges that both youth and summer are too short.

NOT Trending: Backpacks as frontpacks. From the store window, I have a seen a couple of students carrying their backpacks frontward so it looks more like a baby carrier. Not a good look for most people.

    sea sack

Back in the 80s, the backpack was largely confined to campus life and was carried primarily on one shoulder. Since then, the backpack has become more mainstream, carried on both shoulders and has even been converted into being an attractive purse option. Sea Bags’ Sea Sack is functional and crafted from recycled sailcloth for a hip nautical look. It is all good.

Again, no scientific research sources to cite here. But the next time you see a t-shirt adorned with practical items or notice a rope bracelet out of its typical season, don’t think of Rodeo Drive or Fifth Avenue. Instead think of a view from Bow Street.

<![CDATA[Fashion Fridays: Fashion Words of Wisdom]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/wisdom/ simple dress"Fashion shouldn't be about what is appropriate. Getting dressed is much more fun if it's about satisfying you." -Alexander Wang

I could not have put this any better. I can't stand it when people ask me or each other "What should I wear?" Or, "What are you going to wear?" Fashion is a way of self-expression. It is exploring your OWN likes and dislikes - the way you dress or adorn yourself should be completely about you and what makes you feel good and confident. It simply does not matter if someone else would or would not wear the same thing.

"Less is More." -My Own Mother

This is true is so many cases - in fashion and in life. More often than not people try to wear all top trends of the season at once, when really only one trend at a time will work. Too many trends can complicate the outcome. I find this to be especially true when getting dressed up....the simpler the better. If you have a beautiful dress you never want to take away from it with to much jewelry and/or make-up. So the more dressed up, more polished & put together I want to look the less extras I add.

"Wear what you like and what makes you feel good!" -Marc Jacobs

Follow your instincts about what looks good on you! Take some risks but always know yourself well enough not to stray too far from what makes you be you.

    Style

"The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows & the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years." -Audrey Hepburn

Leave it to are beloved Audrey to put fashion in its place. True style comes from within, not from the objects draped all over the person!

<![CDATA[Maine Hits NY Fashion Week with Indashio]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/NYfashionweek/ We often are asked why we believe in doing business in Maine. The reasons are many. Besides being one of the greatest places ever to live, we love that this is a place where we know our neighbors. We can collaborate and help and be helped. So when Tourism shared that Maine was sponsoring a fashion show during NY Fashion Week we were eager to participate!

The designer, Indashio produced a line inspired by Maine. How forward thinking our State is to take part in this. So for us, to be a gift bag was fun. And there started a domino effect. Soon we were speaking with Thos. Moser to bring their scrap leather from their amazing furniture into our bags. We heard Cold River Vodka was participating and loved to bring in the Maine Summers Cookbook -- bookmarked to a great fresh berry martini recipe of course! Tourism added the blueberries and then Coastal Maine Popcorn Co. and chocolate to the mix.

The result looked like a fun night and the benefits much further than NY.

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: Show Us Your Burgee!]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/rock-the-burgee/ Show Us Your Burgee

    burgee

In the longstanding maritime tradition, Sea Bags is launching its program Show Us Your Burgee. It is customary the first time a member of one yacht club visits another club to exchange burgees. We are seeking distinguishing flags representing recreational boating organizations across the country and the world!

Yacht clubs and their members fly their club's burgee while underway and at anchor, day or night, but we will fly your burgee from our flagship store in Freeport, Maine.

We understand the sense of pride that a burgee brings with it. Donated burgees will be raised on our pulley (the closest thing we have to the main masthead) then added to the burgee collection decorating the outside of our store. Thousands of people visit Freeport a year. Classic burgees will capture the attention of shoppers and pique the interest of fellow sailors.

Watch our Facebook page and our Twitter account for a scrapbook online with a brief description of each yacht club burgee. Contact me with questions, Jennifer@seabags.com. And, let’s Rock the Burgees!

<![CDATA[Fashion Fridays: Givining 'em the Boot]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Boot/ Tall bootBack in the 70's Nancy Sinatra sang her infamous "These Boots are Made for Walking," and boy are they ever this season. If there where one fashion item that I would encourage people to get, without a doubt, find yourself a great pair of boots.

There are so many different styles out there: booties, ankle boots, tall boots, dressy, casual, riding boots, heels and flat boots.I find riding boots to be the most versatile and most Maine appropriate boot. They are classic & polished and look good old & beaten up or brand-new. It is well worth the money to get a pair that fits right and is comfortable.

Boots like a handbag or purse should be an investment piece and they should last you not just this fall/winter but for seasons to come. For this reason, it is important to do the research and find a pair of boots that not only look amazing but are practical for you life style. I can't stress this more.....especially in areas of the country that get heavy snow fall. I would also recommend dark brown or black boots. They are the most flattering and will remain in style. Trendy colorful, white or lighter shades of tan colored boots just drawn attention to your foot.

Boots are an accessory that work best when they compliment an outfit and are not the focal point of your look. So get out there and like Nancy said "are ya ready boot?....start walking!"

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: Help me understand the Maxi Dress]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/understanding-maxidress/ A View from Bow Street: Help me understand the Maxi Dress

A maxi dress is a floor or ankle length informal dress. Maxi dresses are formfitting at the top and loose flowing at the bottom, cut to flow over the body.

The fine art of people watching from our store window has shifted down gear now that school has started and many visitors have returned to their home state. Even with fewer people there is plenty to see. One trend that continues to catch my eye is the maxi dress.

Admittedly, I considered it as an addendum to the boho chic of 2008. In my ongoing struggle to be reasonably current (I have long abandoned the attempt at hip or trendy) and when faced with an invitation to a summer wedding, I decided that it was my time for a maxi dress. I did a little online research and was comfortable with my purchase even with the plunging neckline. I fought the frumpy urge for a big cardigan and wore a cropped bolero jacket instead. I added a chunky necklace and strappy sandals.

The immediate comfort flashed me back to seventh grade when I received a velour tracksuit as a gift. That comfy outfit was reluctantly retired only after it became embarrassingly ill fitted and the purple velour was more nubby than lush. Anyway, this maxi dress was like a velour nightgown. What could be wrong with clothing that is purposefully flowing, floor length and perfect for disguising any less than ready for prime time swimsuit body parts?

The maxi dress has everything going for it and yet, I just don’t get it. Am I the only one?

Women have suggested they throw a maxi dress on when walking the dog, meeting friends for coffee or obviously shopping in Freeport. It is comfortable and glamorous I am told. I am just not feeling it.

    small silver star

My observations are two-fold: first, be sure to fix the hemline to avoid a Little House on the Prairie reenactment when gathering up the voluptuous skirt to navigate sidewalks; and second, a snappy, small Sea Bag is the perfect piece to counterbalance the maxi dress as you take it from casual daytime to glamorous nighttime!

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: Stitchers Do It With Precision]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/stitchers/ There are two things that I tell every person who enters the Freeport store. First I mention that all of our bags have been sailed around the world, because all of our bags are made from recycled sailcloth. Most people are aware of this, if for no other reason than reading the store signage. Next I make sure to underscore that each item is made by hand in Maine. Consistently people are pleased to learn that our products are not only manufactured in the US but are actually made locally on Custom House Wharf in Portland.

Sometimes I am asked if I make the bags. This question always puzzles me. It sounds as odd as asking me for my preferred brand of motor oil. I smile and answer that my skilled colleagues in Portland are the magic makers – not me.

Interestingly, according to a Made In America report on www.abcnews.com, if every American spent an extra $3.33 on U.S.-made goods, it would create almost 10,000 new jobs in this country. Sea Bags as a corporation is committed to creating and keeping good paying, sustainable jobs in Maine.

Please understand that this doesn’t mean that I am against foreign-made goods. After all, I see plenty of Longchamp totes on women’s shoulders. Rather, I do suggest that it is nice to know that my co-workers are still utilizing the traditional stitching skills born from shoe factories and shirt manufacturers generations ago.

I am not an economist but I understand there is a reason many companies don’t manufacture domestically -- it is expensive. However, I am proud to be working for a company that is proving Made in America can still be successful. While I am merely an observer of the comings and goings on Bow Street, I took a moment to consider Labor Day beyond the symbolic end of summer or the ill-fated dogma of being considered the last day of the year when it is fashionable for women to wear white.

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: Wristlet 101]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/imagine-now-we-are-shopping/ A View from Bow Street: Wristlet 101

Imagine now that we are shopping.

Depending on your state of mind perhaps your shopping image is the grocery store, running errands in service-type stores or perhaps your image is of a leisurely afternoon browsing through your favorite boutiques.

Now that you have a shopping scene selected, what is on your wrist? Think about it. What is on your wrist while shopping? If you answered a watch or bracelets, then I would like to introduce you to the Wristlet.

There seems to be a trend –dare I say, backlash – against the “if it isn’t in your heaping big purse/bag then you don’t need it” mentality. Women are rwristlet holding objectsealizing that bigger only means a sore shoulder at the end of the day. Instead more and more women are all about traveling light, keeping it simple and downsizing.

Here is a highly unscientific TRUE or FALSE quiz to help determine if you should consider adding a wristlet to your accessories.

TRUE or FALSE: A wristlet can be a clutch but a clutch is not a wristlet.

True. A clutch requires the commitment to have it in hand or tucked under your arm at all times. This requirement is cumbersome and makes it easy to be misplaced. Whereas, the wristlet provides the joy of hands-free for shopping, or for holding cocktails or hors d’ oeuvres – should the occasion arise.

TRUE or FALSE: All pockets should be functional to hold necessities to avoid having to carry a purse.

False. Do not fear decorative pockets in pants or jackets when carrying a wristlet. Jacket pockets do not have to wristlet attached to large bagbe stuffed with lip balm and your credit card. Pant pockets should not bulge with a drivers license or rattle with loose change. The wristlet holds those objects while leaving you with a streamlined profile.

TRUE or FALSE: Organization is everything and everything should have its place.

True and False. This great concept is easier for some people to live by than others. If organization is everything then the wristlet is for you. Determine only what is needed such as cellphone, identification, cash or credit card, lip balm and slide it right in there. Not enough room to be disorganized. And, if everything needs its own place, consider slipping your wristlet into a larger bag so you can spontaneously disengage.

Welcome to the world of the wristlet where you tread lightly and carry only what you need!

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Fashionable Ways to Recycle]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Fashionrecycle/ Recycling its not an option to the majority of us; it is simply away of life. Here are just a few very chic ways to recycle.

Wine bottle1) Reuse old house hold beauty, food and other product packaging for gift-wrapping. This is something I've done for years, because I was tired of running out of boxes & having to buy them, especially around the holidays. A plus to this plan is the laughs you will get from someone opening a box of Wheat Thins, Tide or beer - just to name a few.

    2) Why not make your morning coffee or tea habit more glamorous and buy a reusable mug and/or to-go cup that is totally unique.

    3) Shop vintage clothing stores! This is the absolute best way to insure that no one will be wearing the same thing as you. Vintage shopping also takes the work out of distressing clothing because someone else has already done that for you. Bargain shopping like this is not only good for your wallet, it make you more creative by buying something and altering it to your liking. Its so simple to change the buttons, have a zipper added, shorten pants and make a dress a size smaller etc.

    4) Speaking of altering… why not make those old pants into shorts? This is extremely handy for those of us with small children. I do this all the time with my own son. First I buy the pants too big and hemmed them. Then, after he has grown out of the shortened pants & outgrown the original hem, chop them off and voila! He now has shorts. This is also a wonderful remedy for pants that end up with holes in the knees.

    5) Shop at antique stores and/or flea markets. As the old saying goes, "One man's trash is another man's treasure.” Some times you can find great furniture that may only need a good cleaning, coat of paint or a wheel to be fixed up, good as new!cork chair

    6) You use to only wear silver jewelry... but now your more into gold? Don't just toss out your favorite silver piece, go to a local jeweler and ask for them to be dipped in gold. This also works in reverse if you have something gold but would rather silver or white gold.

    7) Tired of your hot pink lipstick that you where into last summer? Don't give it the heave-ho yet… lipsticks make great cream blushes and are very handy when traveling.

    8) Need a quick, cheap trash can? Throw some paint on an old packaging box (be sure to use recycled plastic grocery bags for liners) and your all set. Yes, I did actually do this in college.

    9) Bummed that your black clothing has faded? Try bringing them back to life by dying them in black Rit fabric dye (available at most grocery stores). This is a simple way to get some longevity out of your basic black clothing.

    10) Finally, get yourself a handy & fashionable Sea Bag that has a multitude of uses and will last for a lifetime!

<![CDATA[The Story of 5 Red Stars and Why I Believe in Beauty Pageants]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/5-red-star-bags-beauty-contest/ The story of five red stars and why I believe in beauty pageants

Here in our Freeport store, I have observed a certain process that most people use when purchasing their own Sea Bag. Our store is small and personal. There is plenty of space to browse and a nice selection from which to choose. During the summer months, we receive new inventory every few days so the complexion always changes.

One day I noticed a peculiar sight. There were five medium red star bags on the shelf. There are rarely more than a couple items of the same design in the store at a time because product moves so quickly and is replaced by more inventory arriving.

A family from ItalyItalian family was first in the store. They snapped pictures of each other near the shelves. Just when the mother broke from the familial cluster to begin “the process” of finding her Sea Bag, the red star caught her attention.

People don’t believe me when I declare that certain people gravitate to certain bags or that some bags look better on the shoulder of certain people than others. But it is true. This woman was all red star.

She tried on –yes, tried on- a few obligatory bags. While speaking beautiful Italian to her family, she gestured for them to go to the service desk. In the spirit of full disclosure, I asked if she had seen the other red star medium bags throughout the store.

We lined up all the stars, like contestants in a beauty pageant, so that she could compare the texture, observe the unique stitching and check the sailcloth for grommets or patches. I told her every bag is different. They are all winners. After some debate, she chose the bag that best spoke to her.

At Sea Bags buying the right bag is serious business. We conduct “beauty pageants” (not usually with so many contestants) everyday when a customer needs assistance narrowing down the selection. First we decide the size then the design or favorite color. Then the bags are put in one place for the comparison and inevitably the customer delightfully chooses the bag that best speaks of character and design.

After all, you don’t just carry a Sea Bag, you fall in love with it. How did you “meet” your Sea Bag?

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: The Preppy Look]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Preppy/ I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed but the preppy look is back in style in a major way. We have not since such a strong resurgence of preppy-chic since the early 80's or since stepping foot into a country club. I really love the back-to-basic attitude and the tomboy-cool looks. In order to pull it off well, it is crucial that you give your beloved classics a modern twist, otherwise you run the risk of people just assume that you really are a preppy, clean-cut, conservative.....Unless you really are. It's best not to go overboard and just select one or two items or a color scheme that is a fun play on the look. Once you narrow down and find your key piece the rest is simple. Just add the shoe, pants or tops you normally wear. I like the idea of mixing this look with beaded or embellished pieces from your wardrobe. Pairing a classic button down oxford with a cashmere sweater and then adding a sequin mini skirt to shake up this look and adds a little pizazz. Updating does not require something so drastic either you can acquire the same affect by adding an embellished shoe or statement jewelry. Adding these little pops of fun feminine pieces prevent the preppy look for becoming to mannish.

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: Where were you?]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/rainyretail/ So where were you Wednesday, August 10?

Odds are good that you were in Freeport, Maine. It seemed as though the whole world was here. Even though it was a rainy Wednesday, I have never seen it so crowded.

Overflowing sidewalks and a traffic jam on Bow Street cannot be explained as simply a bad beach day that brings out shoppers. This was different. Cars were waiting to enter the parking garage and once inside some people were beeping their horns in impatience. Unheard of here!

happy familyPeople were in good spirits even though it rained and rained. At times it looked more of a constant gentle misting than a downpour. Still the sidewalks were as crowded as a state fair midway.

When I asked a young couple visiting our Freeport Sea Bags store what brought them out on such a day, the woman, who grew up in Maine but now lived in Chicago, answered: “It was either a movie or shopping.”

Later when chatting with several college students, I asked the same question as they were flipping through wristlets and crunching sailcloth. “I am from London,” the tall blonde woman declared.

Of course, I thought, continuous rain wouldn’t slow her down. Londoners regularly carry both sunglasses and an umbrella.

The folks from FreeportUSA (our local business association) suggested that people were in town for weekend activities such as the first Half Marathon in Freeport or the AMTRAK Museum opening. I think it was more than that.

Just that morning I read an article in the local newspaper about the slow economic conditions and lack of consumer confidence. That was clearly not the case on this special "black Wednesday" in our shopping mecca of Freeport.

On behalf of Maine's economy, a humble and hearty "thank you" to the shoppers who braved the rain and frizzy hair to grace our stores on a wet Wednesday.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Feather Head]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/feather/ feather headNot sure if you've noticed, but hair feathers are all the rage right now! Like hair extensions, these feathers are attached to the hair. They are clipped or glued on to the existing hair and you can wash and style them just as you would the rest of your hair. When you grow tired of them you can have them removed. Girls (and a few guys) of all ages and lengths of hair are rushing to hair salons across the country to get the famous feathers attached to their hair. There’s an endless variety colors - some bold and bright & others are subtle and blend in to your nature hair.

Though this is an amazingly cool tool & look for salons and people to try, it has had some drawbacks. This sudden craze of hair feathers has caused some controversy because the feather dealers are running out of stock. It seems that the same feathers used in the sport fly-fishing are also the feathers being used on the hair. This is creating a rift between the fashionable salons and the fly fishers. These types of feathers are not just any old feather they are a rare bred rooster feathers and there are only 12 known breeders in the world!feathers

<![CDATA[A View From Bow Street: How Dudes Do Sea Bags]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/dudes/

Our store window provides me a catbird seat on the comings and goings of Bow Street. Always a student of sociology, I enjoy the window’s unique perspective into interesting human behavior in our retail mecca of Freeport. Recently my observations have produced a theory that when it comes to shopping: there are three different types of guys.

    Type I: MHP or “men-holding-purses”

I have witnessed this age-old cultural phenomenon right here in the Freeport store. Often the alpha male becomes glassy-eyed and yields to his female shopping companion by holding her purse allowing her the freedom to touch and try merchandise. MHP are reluctant shopping participants and seem to conjure an out of body experience when the purse straps reach his hand.

Early one morning a couple from Upper Sandusky, Ohio came into the store. The MHP immediately shifted his coffee cup from one hand to the other and offered to hold his wife’s purse. She browsed while he told me that he is so accustomed to holding her purse that when other shoppers make comments such as “…nice bag” he merely smiles and responds, “Thanks!” and tells the person the brand of purse. The best offense is a defense, he told me.

    Type II: “Good Sports.”

These are the men who push the stroller up the ramp so their wives can enter the store unencumbered. The Good Sport leans against the back railing while she shops, and nods his approval as she hangs the bag from her shoulder and checks her reflection in our large wall mirrors. I am partial to the Good Sport, who uses his time effectively and approaches the service desk to chat about the day, ask questions about the shops, or inquire about restaurant recommendations.

Type III: My all time favorite is the Sea Bag Dude.

This guy doesn’t need a woman with him and he knows how to “GUY UP” at Sea Bags. He is not intimidated by the pink whale tails and shiny star bags, and instead targets bags made from vintage sails and our practical Kevlar Dopp kits. Sea Bag Dudes also recognize the versatility of the duffle style bag for gym, beach or overnight travel. Sea Bag Dudes know what they want and appreciate the craftsmanship and utility of our bags.

And Sea Bag Dudes never seem to mind holding their wife’s Sea Bag so she can shop with both hands.

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: Visitors]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/visitors/ The global marketplace came to visit us last week.

We are having a fun summer in Freeport. The store is off the beaten path and uniquely stands alone in the sea of storefronts. Even with some visibility challenges, we enjoy steady visitors seeking their perfect bag.

Tuesday morning last week, I arrived early to the store to find a family sitting on the front porch. It was too early for people to be resting there, and I guessed they would ask for directions to the bathroom. In a thick French accent they asked when the store will open. Even with my high school level of French, I could tell that the response “…in an hour” wasn’t good news. So I unlocked the door and invited them in. They shopped for the perfect bag to take back to Montreal.

Later in the week, the owner of Nantucket Knots (who makes our monkey fist knot key chains) visited the store with a friend from Switzerland. The visitor immediately fell in love with our bags. She declared she had to have a bag for the beach and a different one for errands. Bouy Bag

The unofficial international week here in Freeport wasn’t just about visitors. A stark reminder of the global marketplace came in a reaction to a recent Facebook posting. We posted a picture of our Build Your Own Tote display with 14 images of custom bags designed by our customers. Apparently a FB friend enlarged the picture to better see the images, and when she did she recognized her husband’s buoy colors in the upper left corner! She promptly told her husband about seeing his buoy colors and discovered that she had foiled his plan to surprise her with a custom bag! (Sorry we spoiled the surprise Ben!)

The lesson is the marketplace is international and someone is always paying attention.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Tie One On]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Tieone/ How can you add a little punch to your already fabulous bag? Why not tie a soft, beautifully printed scarf to your handbag for aSea Bag with Scarf killer combo that is one-of-a-kind and all yours? This simple trick is wonderful because it makes coordinating outfits to your bag a cinch. You can change outfits, without the complete overhaul of a bag change, by simply switching your scarf. And, it's quite practical, too!

You never know when a scarf could come in handy. Typically scarfs are worn around your neck or draped over your shoulders; they are a great way to pull your hair back and they can even make stylish belts in a pinch. Best of all this look doesn't have to brake the bank and you'll always know which bag is yours!

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: We have got your number]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/GotYourNumber/ My first Sea Bag has a number 5 on it. The bag was a gift that I immediately loved. I paid no attention to the fact that the number had little relevance for me. It was just unique and cool. Now Sea Bags come with a variety of graphics. The red star is popular followed by the blue anchor.

The numbers still catch my attention. And, you might remember our earlier post:
According to the US Sailing website, offshore racing yachts are required to carry US Sailing numbers on mainsails, spinnakers and each overlapping headsail. These numbers are assigned based geographic area. Each number assigned is unique to the racing vessel, which is why our bags are so special. No two sails are going to be the same. The numbers assigned to the Northeast are in the range of 3000-3499 and some from 3500 to 3999. That’s why 3’s are going to be more popular with sails coming from the Northeast. As we branch out and collect more sails from around the world, we’ll see more numbers and of course, more designs.

For entertainment purposes only and not as a student of numerology (the study of the purported mystical relationship between a count or measurement and life), here are some suggestions of what your single digit Sea Bag could represent. Note the omission of number one is purposeful because it is commonly held that it represents individuality or victory ranking.

Number 2 seeks balance and union. It is a gentle, considerate, and sensitive vibration. Keywords: diplomatic, warm, peaceful, sensitive.

Number 3 causes communications and interaction. . Kind, positive, and optimistic, Three's enjoy life and have a good sense of humor. Keywords: jovial, friendly, positive, adventurous, self-expressive.

Number 4 doesn’t appear often on a Sea Bag but represents creation. This is the worker. Practical, with a love of detail, Fours are trustworthy, hard-working, and helpful. Keywords: trustworthy, helpful, steady, logical, self-disciplined. Number 5 is the freedom lover.

Number 5 is an intellectual vibration. These are "idea" people with a love of variety and the ability to adapt to most situations. Keywords: adaptable, freedom-loving, romantic, resourceful, witty, fun-loving, curious, flexible, accommodating.

Number 6 is nurturing. These people are the first to offer a shoulder to cry on. Keywords: compassionate, responsible, sacrificing and unselfish, harmonious and balanced, generous, kind, humble, charismatic and charming.

Also note that 7 and 9 are more rare to see than number 4 on a Sea Bag unless, of course, custom ordered.

Lucky Number 8 is power. This is the manager. Number Eight is a strong, successful, and material vibration. Keywords: ambitious, business-minded, practical, leading, authoritative, successful, courageous, accomplished, organized.

Just as every Sea Bag has a story, our classic digit bags now have a backstory too. Numbers no longer have to be mysterious – unless of course you prefer the mystique!

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Seeing RED]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/red/ In the heat of summer, it's hard to believe that fall is just around the corner (especially these last few days). Following the lead from summer colors, fall is all about bright vibrate colors. The hues are definitely becoming more and more intense with deep saturation. One color in particular that is leading the color trend is RED.

This classic color is gracing the runways of many designers this season. Outerwear, dresses, shoes, handbags, sweater and coats are all coming up red. There is even a lot of head-to-toe red. All red hues are the driving this trend and one thing is certain - the brighter the better! So call it apple, merlot, ruby, scarlet or tomato but just be sure to embrace this color whether you paint your nails red or throw on a bright red coat.

The best part of red fashions, are that they don't put you in the red. So, be bold and go paint the town red!

<![CDATA[A View from Bow Street: Every bag tells a story]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/bagstory/ Summer in Maine is a great time for visitors. In the Freeport store, we enjoy meeting people who share their stories whether related to Sea Bags or not. Recently one of our favorite people, Mark Duffield, stopped by.

He and his twin sister, Sharon, were day-tripping from Boston to celebrate their birthday. After some retail celebrating they headed for a planned lobster dinner and a game of croquet reminiscent of their childhood.Blackstone's Beacon Hill

While walking around the store, Mark told his sister that he was the first retailer outside of the state of Maine to sell Sea Bags. He first met with Hannah and Beth at his store, Blackstone’s of Beacon Hill, when they were all trying to figure things out. And he has been selling Sea Bags ever since. Mark and Sharon agreed to pose for a photo with Mark’s favorite bag.

The True North bag is his biggest seller on Beacon Hill. He told us the story of how it’s design came to be. According to Mark, Beth scribbled the outline of an arrow on notepaper and Hannah lit up with design ideas. The concept started as a geographical directional reference of True north on maps and globes by longitude lines.

As it turns out, the story grows more metaphoric than that. The design relates to seeking direction or looking for a truth around life issues, such as vocation or relationships. In leadership literature, True north refers to finding one’s true self in order to be more efficient in business environments and effective in business decisions. This bag strongly reflects the personality of the person carrying it. Mark explains, think of someone who is a fixed point of steady support in difficult times.

Think of a person who represents a source of consistency in an ever-changing world. Think of a person who helps keep your navigational arrow pointing to your True north. Who do you know that fits this description? Who has had this True north influence in your life?

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: IKAT- No, this is not a hip new internet pet]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/IKAT/ IKAT in the Indonesian language means "to tie" or "to bind." IKAT is the Indonesian dyeing technique used to pattern textiles with a resist dyeing process, similar to tie-dye, on either the warp or weft fibers. This age-old printing process has been hitting the the home deco market for sometime now with beautiful curtains, pillows and accent chairs. IKAT

Naturally the fashion designers have started to incorporate these striking fabrics into there collections with statement skirts, dresses, swimwear and a slew of accessories. The IKAT technique typically is a bright, colorful, blurred and slightly abstract patterns which is ideal in creating that laid-back summer feel for both your home and/or wardrobe.

If you are pattern shy, the easiest way to embrace this trend is to accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!

<![CDATA[A View From Bow Street: Like Attracts Like]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Likes/ Friends in PinkThere are many theories on the laws of attraction. In my humble opinion and based on my window to the world (or at least Bow Street in Freeport), it appears to me that like-attracts-like.There are contests for pets that resemble their owners. Over the years sometimes married couples may seem to look similar. But have you ever noticed how friends look like each other, too? Coincidence? Perhaps. But I think not. Somehow it happens.

Take notice. Look at friends huddled around a table in the coffee shop. Check out friends meeting in the hotel lobby before going shopping. Odds are pretty good that they will strongly resemble each other. Now it is not the physical features. Instead pay attention to the style of clothes or the type of accessories. This is not to mean that friends wear the exact same item (we all know what kind of commotion that would cause if true) but they often wear the same style.

I have witnessed dozens and dozens of folks shopping Bow Street. Most often I can easily match friends to friends. A few weeks ago, three women entered the store looking like Charlie's Angels. Long legs and short skirts. Bangles clanking and flip-flops snapping. They could not have been more exact than if they had coordinated a uniform. This is a careful observation – not judgment – of the beauty of friendship.

Whale Tail PinkI realize some folks will declare to be the opposite of their friend. And yet, from my perspective, most of the friends shopping together are bound by similar ways of wearing a ponytail or a scarf. So, I merely suggest take a minute to look across the table at your friend. You just might see some object quite familiar reflecting back at you.

Of Note: As I was writing, Alex and Sam (note the pretty neck scarfs) came into the store. They graciously agreed for their picture to be taken before each purchased a pink, whale tail wristlet for themselves.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Get SHORTY!]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/shorty/ Shorts have never been my cup-of-tea, for may reasons, but mostly I have never found them to be flattering on women. This season I have decided to give shorts a second chance and for the first time in my life, I simply can't get enough of them.

There are so many options in style right now, it should not be difficult to find the perfect pair for just about anyone. Most immediately, turn to the old traditional denim shorts and surprisingly these shorts are the most difficult to wear for the majority of us.

I would highly recommend looking into some of the other chic shorts popping up by the handfuls in floral, lace, scalloped edged, bright colored, suede and, even leather! Most importantly, don't limit yourself to only day shorts. Shorts with so many pretty details look great for warm evening dinners or nights out on the town.

A couple uniquely styled recycled sails will be hanging from our Freeport store in July. The Dacron surface provided the perfect surface to celebrate the connectivity between Maine’s vibrant art scene and seafaring history.

Sea Bags donated these sails for renowned graffiti artist Tim Clorius to personalize during the recent dedication festivities of the Institute for Doctoral Studies in Visual Arts in Portland.

Tim, who creates legal aerosol art in Portland and cities all over the country, offered to share his art by tagging on these recycled boat sails with the stipulation that when the sails are made into bags the proceeds go to IDSVA and the students.

If you would like the opportunity to participate in the online auction just leave us your email address and we will let you know when the auction begins.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: American Style]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/americanstyle/ Most would not know this about me, but the 4th of July is my all-time favorite time of year. Just the thought of it brings back vivid childhood memories of watching fireworks light up the Maine summer night sky. And, this time of year, in particular, has always been the vision of All-American Style to me.

American Style is not just the obvious stars, stripes, red, white and blue. It’s history, knowledge and an understanding of the resilient spirit of America. Working class folks, farmers, cowboys and pioneer women, inspire this style. Traditional navy blue blazers, lots of denim, cotton prairie style, white eyelet & floral fabrics, basic tee, button downs shirts, chunky hand-knits, plaids, picnic plaids and much more. Denim is the staple and it is an iconic Americana fabric. Originally developed in the States, jeans have been around for longer then most care to remember. They echo a look that is uncomplicated, practical, and versatile. It is one of the most universally loved fabrics around the world.

Whatever your plans are for July 4th be sure to make your own fireworks by celebrating where you live and take some fashion inspiration from your country as well!

<![CDATA[The Noisy New England town of Freeport]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/noisyfreeport/ Much advertising money is spent to present Maine in a most idyllic way. Let me tell you there is not much idyllic going on in Freeport right now!

Bow Street is alive with the buzz of saws, pounding of sledgehammers, rumble of trucks and the chatter of workmen during break time. This is the sound of progress.

The large building next to Sea Bags has been empty for a while. Now it is a beehive of remodeling activity. The plan is to have a restaurant with some retail kiosks ready for this summer.

Jackhammers are breaking cement at the other end of our little parking lot. Rattle. Rattle. Rattle. They are making improvements so that shoppers have better access to shopping above the new parking garage.Wall Mural

Recently a friend told me that the Polo store on Main Street use to be the town gas station. I wrinkled my nose at the thought that a greasy, old gas station could have ever held the high profile spot now synomous with Ralph Lauren’s Polo Store. He reminded me that is how the footprint of the town continues to evolve.

Right here in Sea Bags we are remodeling, too. The back wall has been buffed and freshly painted (much quieter activities) and a large graphic to be added. For those who have been here, our store is quaint and bright. Now the back wall hosts a mural depicting how the journey of recycled sailcloth continues with each of our totes.

The noise and the construction will be done and gone by the time a large number of folks make their shopping pilgrimage to Freeport. Remember our Sea Bag store is right in the middle of all the change and improvement. Please stop by and check out the back wall mural when you are visiting the quiet New England town of Freeport.

<![CDATA[The view from Bow Street is été est la marinière]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Frenchstripes/ Although that title exhausts my high school French, it is true. Summer is perfect for the nautical style of la marinière, better-known as the Breton, or sailor stripe. From the Bow Street window, I have noticed many women wearing shirts and dresses of this simple, classic and timeless style.Sailor Shirt

And, of course, this style catches my eye because at Sea Bags we are partial to anything with a nod to the maritime. But it is my mother’s voice that I hear warning me against the risk of wearing unflattering horizontal stripes. I like the look –on other people.

Striped ToteI think the original version is blue stripes against white background. This concept was the inspiration for our new designed bag with neat blue stripes silkscreened against the white sailcloth. For an extra dose of fun, an anchor, star or number is layered on top of it like a pendant. So this bag is perfect for incorporating the sailor stripe without worrying about the bug-a-boo of wearing horizontal stripes if you are larger than a size 6.

No matter the fashion era, sailor stripes will always be on trend and offer the chance to create your own personal style. If horizontal stripes are a no-no for you, then the striped Sea Bag is a yes-yes or Oui Oui.

<![CDATA[The surf is up in Freeport!]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/freeportsurfing/ While most people typically surf channels or the Internet within the controlled environment of their own homes, there is ever increasing number of adventure-seeking, water-loving people who are Hanging Ten (lingo translation: riding a surfboard with the toes of both feet hooked over the front) right here in Maine.

A little Internet surfing revealed that real surfing is the fastest growing water sport in the world. Recently two such themed Sea Bags showed up in our Freeport store it was clear that surfing is also one of the few sports or arts that creates its own culture. Totally cool. Radical.

As a non-surfer, I wonder about surfing’s origins in two parts: “When were the first surfboards ridden?” and “Who were the first surfers?” However, I am told that a seasoned surfer thinks more in terms of: “When was the first stoke?” Yes, there is definitely a separate language and mindset around surfing. In Hawaiian, the term hopupu means to be high on life, especially riding waves.

No need to go to Hawaii for “wave sliding” known as he`e nalu in old Hawaiian. When the tides are high and the winds are gusting, we have a strong surfing community along the coast of Maine. Granted wetsuits may be needed longer here than in the Aloha state, but this sporting trend is growing in popularity in southern region of our state. For example, Friday June 17th, Grain Surfboards shop in York will host the New England Premiere of Mikey DeTemple’s new surfing film Sight|Sound. The film captures beautiful footage from some pretty exotic locations including some fun scenes from right here.

Did you know that there are surf camps in Maine? Actually there are several of them being offered starting at age 5 with the basics and water safety. Teenagers and adults can learn surfing, boogie boarding, skimboarding, stand up paddling, and body surfing. It promises a great work out as it’s like doing Yoga on water and really works the core.

Not soon to sign up for surfing camp, I do appreciate the Surf and the Surfboard Sea Bags even more after a brief glimpse into the surfing scene in our Pine Tree State. I remain among the many people who view storm waves as too choppy, difficult and as an adversary of nature. Whereas, our surfer friends see the potential for fun to figuratively go full-tilt on a risky course. Hang Ten. Do you know anyone who surfs Maine?

<![CDATA[Nailing It This Summer! ]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Nailingsummer/ Nothing says summer quite like hot-colored nail polish! I'm usually not a huge fan of nail polish, but this year I am finding it especially difficult to ignore all the enticing colors being offered. Pastels, metallics, neons, nudes, just about any bright, bold lacquers you can imagine are making a huge appearance this season from the runway to the main-steam.
    Summer Nails

There is no doubt that there is a nail color or color combination out there for everyone. The biggest dilemma that I often face is deciding which color to choose?!? One way to conquer this situation is to go mega bold and paint a different color on every nail or you may want to try the ultra-chic ombre manicure.

A few things to remember when painting your nails in such bold colors is to try and keep your nails short, otherwise you may inadvertently create an overstated look. Another rule of thumb to follow is: if toes are brightly painted then try to paint fingernails a neutral or more muted color - or vice versa. Have fun with color!

<![CDATA[Spring/ Summer 2011 Top 10 WEARABLE Trends]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Wearabletrends/ You don't need to overhaul your closet to update your style for the new season. In fact, with just a few additions and/or tweaks you can easily transform those staples ideas that are already in your closet. From 70's accessories to boat inspirations, here's what you'll need to conquer this season in style:

Color Blocking - The easiest way to add life to your outfit is to pop in some of the season’s bright colors. The biggest mistake people make is adding too much color at once. Small, simple additions like a bright scarf or earrings is all that is needed. Remember less is more.

Seductive 70's - Bold gold, glitter, metallic, Lucite accessories, over sized floppy hats, platforms and wide leg jeans/trousers all enhance a 70's look.

Boat Totes - You don't have to be on a boat or even near the sea but you need to make sure to rock the boat with a nautical themed bag These classic carry-alls are wonderful because they compliment every outfit – wear it day & evening.

Be A Good Sport - Even if you are not sporty, try adding a few racey items your wardrobe, they can add some athletic energy.

The Long Skirt - Its time to say so-long mini and hello maxi... this can be a hard one to understand, with the heat of summertime most aren't covering-up more of their body. The look is very relaxed, comfortable and in soft flowy, breathable fabrics that will have you wondering why you even bothered with the sticky, clingy minis.

Cool Cover-ups - As a new alternative to the classic denim jacket Baja pullover, techy hoodies and, sporty windbreakers are a easily and often practical up-date.

Boyish Flats - With all the newly updated classics from loafers to boat shoes; it’s never been chicer to walk in his shoes.

Graphic Patterns - Graphics are center stage this season; this might leave your mother with déjà-vu or give her another reason to hang-on to her "what she considers classic" originals.

White Jeans - Be sure to clean up your act and keep plenty of bleach handy with bright white denim.

Get Punk'd - Slashed tops, clunky but cool footwear, and studded leather are all the right pieces to get bad girl chic. My only recommendation would be to contrast these edge items with something softer and sweeter to avoid terrifying your friends and family.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Wedged In]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/wedgedin/ Wedge HeelsThe statement wedge is a show stopping accessory that is a key piece for this summer season. These sky-high styles are offered in a variety of prints, metallics, rich textures and a multitude of color create a luxe yet laid-back feel.

Wedges, also known as platforms, are hot right now and are a permanent fixture in my wardrobe for many reasons. Though these types of shoes go in and out of style, they are surprisingly practical to keep in your closet for years to come. Often the platform itself is made of cork which is great for cushioning the foot and absorbing the shock when you walk, making these shoes much more comfortable and wearable then the average heel. There is more shoe with a solid base for the foot, which gives the wearer a lot more stability than regular high heels.

I would advise to avoid the wooden versions of the wedge, as they are not as comfortable. The best part of the wedge is once they go out of fashion they are still great even unnoticed to wear with pants. And for those of you that struggle to walk in the usual pointy heels these are they ideal heel.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Are You Man Enough? ]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/manenough/ "The Man Bag", "Guy Purse", "Manny Pack" or my favorite "The Murse" are all infamous nick-names for a growing demand of designer man bags. That's right guys; make fun of these hugely popular bags and the men who wear them all you want, but the reality is that this is one look that is definitely here to stay!

Man BagLets face it - guy bags have been around for years, but no one cared enough to call them out. Brief cases, tote bags, camera bags, messenger bags are all different breeds of masculine baggage that men have been disguising as man bags for as long as we can remember. Now under scrutiny, guys are saying, "real men don't wear such things." In reality, those same macho-men that are snubbing and scoffing at this style are wearing them but just calling them something else.

Why is style here for the long term? That is because the look is not only practical, it actually makes alot of sense. Now-a-days with the constance demands of carting around more and more gear like laptops, i-pads, cell phones, paper work, etc. "the man bag" is both functional and stylish. The modern men needs to be prepared and able to adapt to just about any work or life situation with easy. Men realizing that rather than stuffing their pockets or getting us ladies to carry around all their junk, the fashionable man bag is alot more appropriate, accepted and somewhat imperative.

In efforts to give men more choices fashion designer have made great strives to make more masculine bags. Men everywhere (even in Maine) can rest assure that strapping on a man bag will no longer compromise there manhood.

<![CDATA[Your Design Here]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/yordesignhere/ This week I placed my first order for a “Build Your Own Tote.” I get to work on most of the custom orders, which is fun & challenging. As I went to place my order, I was a deer in the headlights. I drew a blank. I was an artist standing in front of a blank canvas with paint and no ideas. I was a writer with writer’s block. I had all the obvious questions in my head, “Will she like it?” “Will this be the coolest design I could come up with?” “Will she know it is a Sea Bag?” Build Your Own Tote

I turned to my boss, Beth, for advice. She had great advice and steered me in the right direction. But, I still couldn’t sit down and design it myself. I turned to one of our seasoned designers, Jess. She was able to take my ideas, which hardly came out of my mouth clearly, and make it into something that made sense.

I realized how difficult it is for our customers to come up with a unique idea, communicate the idea in words, and feel like a part of the process. I also have a new appreciation for customers at home waiting for their tote to arrive. The anticipation is killing me!

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Neon Nation]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/neonnation/ If you haven't noticed by now fluorescent colors are taking the fashion world by storm. Like it or not, designers are popping these (not-so-subtle) brights into just about every fashion scenario. Some designers are opting to use small accents of the shocking hues, while others are hugely embracing the vibrate vibe - everything from topstitching to haute couture formal gowns.

    Brights

The crazy bright colors are most often used for eye catching sporty apparel, but the traditional day-glow is recently exploding in a more lady like way. Nail polish, lipstick, jewelry, ballet flats or heels, bags, belts, ball gowns are all very feminine and all being seen in a new light. Electric pink, acid yellow and flouro orange have been in the forefront for the season’s most popular neons.

The draw is that it is unexpected and it is just the ticket that can take your blah outfit into wow - in little to no time. This is such a fun trend because there are so many different ways to embrace it and anyone of any age can. Though the couture dresses are incredible; what I would suggest and what most of are budgets can swallow is to use the new neon in small doses. Paint you nails fluorescent pink, pick up a neon bag or clutch or slide on a pair of acid tone shoe these are the simplest and most successful uses of this pungent punk palette.

Mostly, just have fun with it! It may be a bit outside of your comfort level but it’s always a good idea to challenge your self. So go ahead and stick out from the crowd - you may find out that you really won't be sticking out all that much after all.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Mother's Day]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/mothersday/ As Mother's Day is rapidly approaching us, I am naturally thinking of my own mother. A saying she has always said to me that reminds me of her and I have never forgotten is... "Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold."

This obviously refers to friendships that come and go throughout life. It also has underlying meaning of worth. Illustrating that you may not be as close with someone as you once where, their friendship will always be of value to you. Gold is clearly more valuable than silver but one would never just disregard silver. In the fashion world both silver and gold are a hot commodity. The metallics really give life to clothing and add a little fun flashiness. What it really comes down to personal taste - some like silver, others prefer gold and a few really like the idea of mixing metals or wearing both together.

Accessories like jewelry, shoes or handbags that incorporates more then one metallic really gives you the optimum wardrobe options and the most bang of your buck. Like a good friend, a versatile accessory with silver, gold and everything in between will certainly with-stand the test of time and never go out of style. Thanks to all the moms for there words of wisdom, fashion advice and, most of all LOVE!]]> Fri, 06 May 2011 16:08:42 +0000 <![CDATA[Reading Between the Lines]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Lines/ No one is denying Stripes are a humongous fashion trend this year. The linear momentum keeps building to new heights, with no signs of slowing down. Stripes are very impactful, classic, sporty and a bit masculine in feeling. A trend this aggressive, and of this magnitude, is no doubt going to influence all areas of style.

Stripping has added personality and a fresh modern twist with powerful lines and colors combinations. At the forefront of this craze there was a strong varsity and nautical stripe influence. These popular classics continue, but now fashion designers are manipulating these traditional styles. Creating their own looks by offering stripes in a multitude of shapes, colors, widths and designs.

Stripe infatuation is occurring on so many different levels, clearly making this trend a simple and ideal look for just about everyone! That said - I would be lying if I told you I had an undeniable love for these stylish striations. I have a tendency to struggled with the masculine nature of stripes and that is NOT to say I dislike them at all. I am just extremely picky and cautious when it comes to selecting the right stripe. Stripes are personal to me, some are incredible and others just don’t do the body any favors. To tastefully pull off stripping I would suggest that LESS is more. Dresses, tops, accessories best represent this look and are easily integrated with other piece in your wardrobe. Pairing stripe with solids also helps brake up the silhouette and adds interest. My favorite look is a classic two-color stripe background with a solid pop color(s) shapes on top. This approach really helps to achieve depth and, is a more appealing sophisticated stripe composition.

<![CDATA[From Around the Shop: Marjorie]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Marjorie/ Every once in a while, someone special comes into the shop. We met Marjorie recently (in the yellow jacket). She read about Sea Bags in the newspaper and thought she could donate her husband’s old sea bag from his time spent in the Navy during World War II. We thought that it would only be appropriate to make her a tote out of her husband’s sea bag.

Our creative team was more than up for the challenge and they came up with a great tote. We called Marjorie to come pick up her tote, but we had to wait until the next day when her daughter could drive her down to our shop. Marjorie brought pictures of her husband (pictured in the middle), who we all thought was quite handsome, and told us some stories about his time in the Navy. She is so proud of her husband. And, we were proud to hand over her tote.

She left with her bag, and we all had tears welling up in our eyes, knowing that we touched her. It was the ultimate recycle & we were able to give Marjorie a piece of her own history back in a usable tote. And, we were lucky to meet her husband through her stories.

A few days later, Marjorie came back for a quick visit carrying a plate full of fudge. She knew how to win us over! Thanks, Marjorie!

<![CDATA[Jumpsuits... Not Just for the Easter Bunny]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Jumpsuits/ It was only a few years ago that the jumpsuit was among the hottest summer fashions & a "must have." The jumpsuit, also called the playsuit or romper, is back and stronger then ever. These famous one-piece wonders are a great option for fashionistas looking for something to add to their spring 2011 wardrobe.

Playsuits are trending at the moment but are controversial because they are considered young & unflattering on some body types. For anyone that is willing to give this look a try, it is definitely a great one-piece (one price) investment
for the spring season. Now-a-days there are many more sophisticated and newer version of the romper with more flattering cuts & shapes. This is do in part to the innovative designs being produced by designers. Overalls, evening, loose & flowy, tailored and, sporty are just some of the different variations of jumpers being offered.
The true beauty of a jumpsuit is its one step simplicity. With this trend there is no need to worry and fret about pairing or mixing & matching different items in your closet. You are able to just jump on in and go with your favorite accessories to make the perfect outfit. Belts, jewelry, blazer, clutch or tote can make the jumpsuit the best item in your closet.

<![CDATA[Save the Whales]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/whales/ The high-waisted jean is back! This is a look that has been desperately trying to re-validate itself after years of merciless scrutiny. We are glad to see this trend come back, because this will decrease the “dreaded whale tail.” For those of you who don’t know what we are talking about, we mean when low riding jeans are lower than the underwear beneath, creating the vision of what looks like a whale tail coming out of the water.

The Hawaiians see whale tails as a symbol of freedom, strength & joy within a beautiful spirit. Have you ever been on a whale watching tour? It is absolutely amazing to see one of these giants of the sea show their tail. And, did you know that half a whale tale is called a fluke?

We think that there is a place for the whale tail in fashion. Although, perhaps it is best to wear it on your tote bag, your necklace, shirt or ring. Embrace the high-waisted jeans and let the large, majestic creatures of the sea be the only ones showing their tail.

<![CDATA[It's Easter Wine!]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/easter/ Easter is a time of year when family and or friends come together to enjoy a notable meal. Unlike Christmas & Thanksgiving, Easter is usually always a brunch or lunch. And, choosing a wine can be intimidating to say the least. Keep in mind that most of us are not wine experts, but most of us like a glass of wine with our meal. A good rule of thumb to remember when choosing a wine is to make sure the wine doesn't overpower the meal. For instance, Mexican food with a lot of spice can take on a more powerful wine. Meanwhile, chicken risotto needs a milder wine to let the flavors of the food shine through. wine on the counter

There are two main dishes usually served on Easter: Ham or Lamb. Ham, with a bit of a salty flavor, pairs well with a dry Riesling. Rieslings are rarely oaked (like many chardonnays), they have a rich texture, and can be sweet to offset the salty flavor of the ham. There are two Rieslings that are my “go to” wines: Pacific Rim Riesling (retails for approx. $11.99). Pacific Rim has really cool packaging and is 99.2% organic.

Having Lamb as your main dish? Try pairing lamb with a Pinot Noir, a fairly elegant wine due to the difficulty in growing the grapes. Pinot Noir has a delicate complexity without heavy tannins or spice. I suggest trying Fetzer Pinot Noir (retails for $7.99). You might bock at the name Fetzer, but don’t be fooled! All of the grapes harvested on Fetzer property are grown without pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers in California.

Raise a glass and share your wine knowledge with your friends & family. Enjoy Easter Sunday!

<![CDATA[Finding Your Inner Animal]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/animal/ Animal print is not a trend in fashion; it now considered a fashion standard. In the past, furry fashions and animal prints have been considered high, expensive fashion - after all, a leopard coat is the classic, timeless fashion piece. Today, animal prints are more affordable, making it easier to add a single piece to complete an outfit. A leopard scarf or shoes can really update or complete an outfit.

Designers have continued to push the gamut and testing the limits of what is acceptable & breaking down so-called, "fashion boundaries." We've noticed a lot of color chances being taken with the animal print. For instance, a turquoise and tan zebra is not realistic but creates a more modern look - it’s fresh. These bold moves with color and persistence using animal prints are the reasons that this has become a fashion standard.

How do we brake through to the wild side in Maine? We can take creatures native to Maine like lobsters, seashells & whale tails and incorporate them into our designs. If nautical is hot right now, why not add some nautical creatures to push the envelope a bit further. And, its exciting that designers are branching out and trying new & fun ideas.... as I've said before balance is key.

Find your inner animal with some fun, new prints.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: White - Not Just for Brides]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/white/ Last week I wrote about colors being splashed all over the fashion pool. A direct contrast but another enormously hot color trend right now is layers of white.

Crisp, clean, pure, and simple, white is the ideal blank canvas. The beauty of white fashions is that they are affordable and available at all shopping locations from your local boutique to the closest box store. White T-shirts, dresses, jeans and even handbags are the most basic items that you can buy. This is an easy fashion trend you can follow this season.

Pairing white with more white is actually a great way to disguise body parts that you are not fond of, as wearing only one color can camouflage imperfections. It does this by focusing on a whole instead of a part. Solid outfits can be powerful and sophisticated & a great palette for accessories.White Layered

Always proceed by wearing white with caution! I can't tell you the countless times I've tried on a pair of pants only to find that I can see the pocket lining through the fabric. There is nothing more unflattering. This leads us to another white rule - nude colored under garments are a must, because white can be visible through the garment. Finally, keep a bleach pen or spot remover on hand for easy clean ups with your favorite white.

White is a wonderfully versatile color, its simplicity, grace and, elegance is unmatched by any other color. Just think of your best friend’s wedding with the bride dressed in white. It is timeless, looks fabulous on everyone and combines effortlessly with every color imaginable. Start searching for a great white shirt or the perfect pair of white jeans, just be sure to pick up a few extra Tide sticks along the way....you'll need ‘em.

<![CDATA[Color Me Beautiful! ]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/colorbeautiful/ Color is everywhere this spring, there is no denying it. We have emerged from winter with a sunny disposition. Red, blue, green, yellow, orange and everything in between is making a huge in-pact in the fashion industry.

Traditionally spring and summer are more colorful times of the year in fashion and this seasons is no different. Make-up, handbags, shoes, dresses, pants, tops, even jewelry are popping up everywhere in vivid bright hues. The difference this time is the amount of color being used, it is an intense saturation and unusual combinations. It seems that designers just can get enough of the bold, impacting palettes & no color is off limits.

What makes this season's color palette modern? It is the intensity of the colors. New color needs to be bold, strong and dramatically rich. Layering intense colors, using tone on tone or complementary shades within the same family is great concept or way to execute. You want to choose more intriguing & complex colors, not primary colors. Unexpected pairings like camel and mustard, blue, green and mint, or red, burgundy and, orange are three examples. The idea is not to clash but exist harmoniously.

How can you incorporate this trend into your own fashion? One simple approach is to wear one or two brights with the basics. Black, white or khaki are all easy neutral starting points that are already in are closet. Then, add a vibrant color on top with a neutral or dark on the bottom. Start with the tones that most complement your natural coloring but don't be afraid to try something new. Surprisingly flashy colors cannot only perk up your wardrobe but really add life back into your complexion. Step out of your comfort zone and try it. With a kaleidoscope of colors to choose from right now, be a kid with a box of crayons - the possibilities are endless!

<![CDATA[From Around the Shop: Cutting Sails]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/CuttingSails/ I jumped at the opportunity to help actually make one of our products yesterday. I was asked to cut a pile of panels for wristlets. I was happy to actually be part of the manufacturing process and jumped up with all my enthusiasm. I thought to myself, "Cutting straight lines, how hard can it be?"

MaryAnn guided me through the process and laughed at me or with me as I asked her all the ridiculous questions that came to mind, including "How will I know when I get to 100? How close do I need to get to the line? Should I iron these?"

It took me quite a while to get through my pile of cutting. My conclusion is that it is hard to cut on the line! The sail material is a little slippery & I was rushing to keep pace. I think I am better at the computer stuff than the physical stuff. At least now I can cross sail cutting and splicing (see my previous blog) off my list. Maybe I will be good at sewing?

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Skirting the Issue]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Skirting/ Season after season, "The Dress" has been at the top in the fashion world. However "The Skirt" has been nudging its way back to life, by becoming exceedingly more prevalent on the runways and in stores. Numerous skirts began quietly popping up last spring. The Mini, Full Mini, and Pleated Mini where just the beginning of what would eventually turn out to be a returning trend.

This past fall mini skirts still held there ground but some hemlines began dropping to the knee. Designers created a fuller tulip like shape and fitted high-waist versions. Now that we are on the brink of spring, designers continued there voyage south with the addition of The Midi - not to be confused with The Mini. The Midi is a couple of inches above the ankle. The Long Maxi skirt is also increasing in popularity. Though The Midi and Maxi are the newest to graze the runways and fashion magazines you are still going to see may different variations and silhouettes. As far as The Dress is concerned, it is still important, but just no longer the only act in town. With all these different hemlines to choose from, the selection is more diverse then ever. There certainly is a skirt for every buddy and every body.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: RUT-ROW?]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/rutrow/ Recently I've been avoiding my closet because every time I look at it am filled with frustration and boredom. Undeniably I am in a "FASHION RUT". This is pretty common at least for me, and this time of year. Its been a long winter and I've grown tired of my clothes. I think most everyone can relate to this feeling. Every single item in your wardrobe seems unappealing and everything you put together or try on just doesn't seem right. Looking at the pile of clothing that has accumulated on your bed, you think in complete self pity, "I have nothing to wear!"

So what is the best way to break free from your rut? The best way to breath new life into a wardrobe gone stale is to switch up your accessories. Tired of yours? Pick up a few new accessories to play with. Scarves, necklaces, bracelets, belts, even a cute vintage blazer are all my favorite accessories/outfit rejuvenators. Any of these items can instantly and easily add freshness to an ordinary pant and top.

Your un-rutting vehicle should be versatile enough to work with several of your already existing outfits. So choose wisely. Try the new accessory with a few outfits that you frequently wear. Also try wearing the accessory itself in a couple of different ways if possible.

To put an end to my rut, I walked into a local store I instantly fell in love with a beautiful one-of-a-kind scarf. I tried it on in several different ways and knew it was something I could wear both now and going into summer. Often, it is just the addition of one inspiring piece that can fix your fashion RUT-ROW!

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Seeing Double]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/seeingdouble/ To double up or not? Double denim is a reoccurring trend and its making a fierce come back this spring!

From season to season the amount of denim used in the fashion world fluctuates. It has become a staple in the way we dress and modern life. Most everyone and everyone you know owns not just one but several pairs of jeans. Never obsolete, denim has always had its place in the apparel industry. This spring denim is everywhere and not just in the traditional sense. In the past wearing jeans with a jean jacket or denim shirt was over kill. "Jean Machine" is the term that comes to mind. Last year's torn and distressed denim reached new extremes often exposing more leg then denim. Like many trends that are over used or recycled, designers often retaliate in the completely opposite direction. This time there is more denim and less skin.

The look is much cleaner, tailored, and doubling up on denim is very fashion forward. No longer is denim just for jeans, it is taking its versatility to new heights. Jackets, shirts, shorts, skirts, shoes, handbags are popping up everywhere and in a variety of beautiful blues hues. Designs seem to love the effortless way the classic jean material goes from day to evening. With this traditionally jean fabric being utilized in so many new ways, it is easy to see how mixing the different denims would be natural.

Exploring the "Double D", is controversial. If you dare to try this style; it is most successfully pulled off by mixing washes and textures....this way you avoid looking like you just stepped out of the 1980's. So, is Double Deniming to much of a good thing?......I'll leave that up to you to decide.

<![CDATA[From Around the Shop: Women's History Month]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/womenshistorymonth/ This morning on the radio I heard the DJs talk about Women's History Month. They were sharing stories of different women throughout the centuries. Knowing women’s stories provide role models for younger women. And role models are genuinely needed to for the youth of today.

How did Women's History Month come to be? Congress passed a resolution in 1981 to proclaim Women's History Week, and in 1987 Congress passed a resolution for the entire month of March. By focusing on the achievements of women, we get an authentic view of history. This perspective can encourage girls and women to think big, and it gives insight into the understanding of the female experience. We Can Do It!

I think back to my childhood and remember the first time I saw a Susan B. Anthony coin. I am amazed that she started the civil rights movement for women. The next name that comes to mind is Rosa Parks. I remember where I was when the space shuttle blew up and Christa McAuliffe was lost. The names were dancing around my head, so I decided to take a pole at work (since we are mostly women). Here is the list of names that were mentioned: Rosa Parks, Linda Greenlaw, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosier the Riveter, Joan of Arc and several Moms were mentioned.

The National Women's History Project motto for the month is: Our History is Our Strength.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Repeating Trends]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/repeatingtrends/ They always say that fashion repeats itself....but does it?

Designers often borrow ideas and inspirations from the past. By taking a closer look, you will see that shapes, colors, fit, and fabrics are always updated. Like technology, fashion trends are constantly evolving, improved upon, updated slightly or sometimes dramatically. Styles become modernized.

Clothing trends are a product of our surroundings. People, places, the media, and whether we are conscious of it or not, the way we dress is influenced by just about every aspect of our daily life.

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening". -Coco Chanel

In order to modernize a style from the past it is important to remember that a little goes a long way....in other words, "moderation" is key. You would never see someone wearing bell bottoms with the quintessential polyester butterfly-collared 70's shirt, nor would you see leggings paired with a paint splattered oversized t-shirt unless the person was headed to a theme party. Yet both bell bottoms and leggings have had a recent resurgence in the fashion world.

So if trends are set by us, then how are the styles mainstreamed within the industry? Have you even noticed how one color or collection of colors dominate stores? How do different brands such as The Gap and Prada end up with such similar visions for each season?

Apparel companies use fashion or trend forecasting services. With these services designers are able to stay current on the latest colors, styles, prints, fabrics and overall aesthetics. fashion forecasting is used as a researching tool that guides and defines the most up-to-date styles....in simpler terms it is an apparel designers' library. The competitive nature of the fashion industry does not fall short to these trend services. Therefore designers do not rely on one company for all their trend information. There are many fashion forecasting services available. Apparel designers and their companies utilize several of these forecasters in collaboration to create their own collections from season to season.

For most of the country there is still more winter in the forecast, but for the fashion industry spring and summer are trending.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Is there Maine Fashion? ]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/MaineFashion/ Maine and Fashion? Is there a "Maine" Fashion?? Maine and fashion rarely ever appear in the same sentence and most people would say no to Maine fashion.....but, is there a "look" or "style" of dress equated with Maine? Growing up here I often asked myself this very question. New York is known for it's fashions but is there any style Maine is known for? YES!....Maine is casual cool, practical, effortless, functional, utilitarian; it is an attitude, a way of life.

Most Mainers understand that living here means you must be prepared for any situation throughout the day. For instance, it would not be too uncommon to go from laying on the beach one minute, taking a cruise on a boat the next, and then even a business meeting after that. This means not only do you have to be ready for extremely diverse situations but a variety of different elements. Like I said, it's a way of life and most definitely not for everyone.

After years of trying to fight the Mainer in me, I began to re-think things and realized that Maine practical style did not only make sense.... it was a "look" within itself. I refer to this as "embracing the Maine".

In order for a style to work you must first own up to it and believe in it. Comfortable with merging both the fashionable world of New York City and the functional/ practical/ utilitarian clothing of Maine, I had a unique approach to fashion. My friends tend to give me a second glance, often followed by a comment like "huh, I wouldn't have put that together, but I like the juxtaposition". In other words they liked the contrast, the irony in the way I would wear a dressy top that most naturally would pair with stilettos. Instead, I would leave my stilettos at home for my clunky snow boots! Another dynamic duo are dramatic high heeled boots, (that normally in Maine would be seen as over- the- top) accompanied with a rustic plaid shirt, suddenly make the boots more subtle.

I am forever "Mainerizing" my clothing and definitely have reality checks with myself as far as my purchases. Will I wear that trend? Better yet, will I wear that trend in Maine? I know one thing for certain, if I can't get it wet or trudge through the snow in it, it simply is a trend that I won't be following; at least for now.

<![CDATA[From the helm: the hidden dangers of being green]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/the-hidden-dangers-of-being-green/ I recently read an article titled: Momma's Got a Brand New Bag (That's Full of Lead) The article stated that disturbing information is beginning to emerge about dangers from the reusable grocery bags. They credited a report in the Tampa Tribune, that said that many of the reusable grocery bags, (most of which are imported from China), may contain excessive levels of lead. Excessive exposure to lead may cause neurological damage in children and infertility among adults.

The article then went on to say that heavy metals aren’t the only thing weighing down your bags: "There’s a good chance that they’re full of dangerous bacteria as well: A study out of the University of Arizona shows that your shopping bag is probably loaded with bacteria including E. Coli. 97 percent of grocery shoppers told researchers that they never wash or bleach their reusable bags, nor do they worry about germs. According to the study, they should. Unwashed reusable bags, it says, are E. Coli magnets and breeding farms. … The study looked at grocery bags in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Tucson, and found that half of them contain the deadly bacteria. Think about it: Lead and bacteria are rubbing up against your fresh fruits and veggies (and books, and clothes, and whatever else your reusable bags hold)".

So what's a green girl to do?

    1. Be an informed consumer: Know where your products are made and what they are made from.
    2. Use bags that can be re-used and washed. From the multiple hands touching groceries and placing products into your bags to the juices and byproducts of your groceries in your bag, you and your bags are germ targets. Wash your bags!
    3. Support your neighbors: buy US made. While the article didn't cover Fair Trade practices, you can help take a stand to support US made products.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Recycled Fashion]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/recycledfashion/ The benefits of recycling are obvious and have become away of life for most of us. If materials are reused/repurposed they kept out of landfills and decreases our trash. Recycled fibers are used to make fabric and or textiles.

Consumer demand has pushed the envelope on "going green," and there has been huge advancements in technology. More manufactures and designer than ever are incorporating recycled fibers into there clothing, accessories, automotive fabric, upholstery and home furnishing lines.

The increase in popularity is mostly driven by the younger generation and there concern for there future. We applaud our friends and fellow manufactures who are recycling, re-using (or re-gifting) and repurposing materials to make fashion.… one person's trash is another's treasure!

<![CDATA[From Around the Shop: Valentine's Day]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/valentine/ Valentine's Day is almost upon us. Valentine Day is a day for the exchange of tokens of affection. When we think of Valentine's Day, we often think of red roses, candy in heart- shaped boxes, mushy valentines, and winged cherubs flying about shooting starry-eyed lovers with arrows. If you live in Portland, ME, you are familiar with the Valentine's Day Phantom, who leaves hearts taped all over the Old Port in the dark of night.

I am still getting to know the ladies & gentleman that I work with, so I decided to ask around and see what everyone was doing for Valentine's Day. I must say that some made me laugh and one made me blush and turn red (which doesn't happen often). Here are my favorites:

    - Hand written poem & Black Dinah Chocolates
    - Preparing a Jamaican dinner & a movie
    - Going out to dinner
    - Baking a cake that will include Oreo cookies in the topping

I will be spending Valentine's Day with my son and husband & yellow lab (a.k.a. my boys). We get some good cuts of steak and spend some quality time together. I will also enjoy my drive to work so I can see where the Valentine's Day Phantom leaves his trail of red hearts. Happy Valentine's Day!

<![CDATA[From the helm: who gave you your first shot?]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/from-the-helm-who-gave-you-your-first-shot/ I was inspired by the interview in the NY Times with Julie Greenwald, Chief Operating Officer of Virgin Records. When asked about handling the transition into management she replied that she out-worked and outhustled everyone. A number one lesson for all of us.
    Amy - Wholesale Manager

My biggest inspiration in this article however, was from her boss. Old fashioned hard work and determination helped Julie excel at the job and justify the opportunity but he took the initial risk. He said, "you've earned it and I know you've never done this before but I think you deserve a shot." it was a calculated risk I'm sure, but a risk none-the-less.

CarrieThe article states that when she was promoted to marketing and expressed fear in not knowing about marketing, she was told to "learn it". Same held true when she was transitioned to video. In a different life, I was in purchasing. My boss thought I could handle the a whole new market of high tech data. I expressed fear of not knowing and he replied, "you better figure it out, because that's where we are heading--I know you can get us there." I've had two opportunities like that in my career. Like Julie, I worked my ass off and made sure no one would ever regret giving me a shot, and as a result more opportunities opened up.

    Sokunthy

Do you remember who gave you your first shot? I do, and it's never left me. At Sea Bags, we now have a team of amazing talent. Amy, our Wholesale Manager started with us cutting sails. A single mom, supporting her children she's smart, organized and efficient. It quickly became apparent she could excel in other areas- experienced or not. Carrie, fresh from a mid-eastern stint with the National Guard serving our Country, came to us to sew. Independent and living on her boat, she's a great relationship manager and negotiator. She's also now our Sails Acquisition Manager. Sokunthy, our Finance Manager from Cambodia, was an administrative assistant. Armed with an undergraduate degree in finance and mostly through her MBA, she couldn't get a job in finance. She deserved the shot and is great at her job. Who gave you your first shot? Pay it forward.

<![CDATA[Fashion Friday: Seasonless Styles]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/fashionfridayseasonless/ A trend that is popping up all over the map is the idea of seasonless fashions. Everyone is tired of switching over his or her closet from season to season. Following any sort of "fashion rules" seems mundane or old. Men, women, and children of all ages are looking for more sustainable clothing and accessories. And no one has the time or money to spare on one season trends. They are looking for simple versatility and longevity.

Winter white, floral dresses, sheer flowy tops, shorts, sundresses with tights are examples of seasonless fashion… need I say more? The most practical and simplest way to embrace this new approach on style is by picking up a few new accessories.

A great investment piece for anyone is a quality handbag. I never knew the importance of a great handbag until I left college and could afford one (sorta). But those same bags that I had to scrounge for in my 20s are still with me now and have more than paid off!

<![CDATA[From Around the Shop: Splicing]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/splicing/ Sokunthy splicingI’ve seen my lobsterman husband splice rope together in a matter of a few seconds. I always chuckle and think, “That looks easy, almost like braiding hair.” I've even done it a few times and was successful in function, but not form.

Then, I started working at Sea Bags, and quickly learned that splicing uses both form and function. One day I watched Sokunthy, our finance manager, splice faster than my husband. I thought to myself, “I have seen my husband splice & I have tried to do this a few times…. I can do this, no sweat!” Her splice looked quite perfect. Meanwhile mine looked like a toddler playing with a ball of yarn.

I decided to look it up online to get directions and I also found a book at the shop with pictures and written directions. I am amazed there are so many different types of splicing: eye splice, horse shoe splice, long splice, short splice, cut splice, back splice, and the list goes on. With each splice, there are different types of tapers. After all of my research, I still can’t splice.

    Splicing Lessons

A few days ago, a handful of co-workers were trying to splice a different way than we usually splice handles. After a few attempts, an expert was brought in, a fisherman from our wharf. In fishing & lobstering, both form and function are needed. We are fortunate to have valuable resources just steps away on Custom House Wharf. I'm off to practice splicing and glad I have my day job.

<![CDATA[Whack A Mole]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/whack-a-mole/ Maine is a State of small businesses. As such, we are lucky to be a great community for sharing information. Recently 2 different people came in to ask advice on starting their own businesses. Flattered as I am, in reality we could be a case study on what not to do.

I'm lucky that in Maine we have many different resources available to small businesses. We love SCORE, the Maine International Trade Center and the Maine Technology Institute. We love using a small bank where our banker is part of our growth plan and we meet with him regularly to go over the good and bad. We cherish our partnerships with our vendors and our customers. So my best advice is not to know the answers, but to develop a great network to find the answers.

None of my trusted sources however, told me this. Doing a start-up business is like a long game of Whack-A-Mole. Just when you get one problem solved, another arises. First it was space, then it was time, then money and you get it. The good news is, we keep solving them. I recently had this conversation with one of my mentors. (CEO of a large global brand) I was lamenting about the need for our new website the 3rd or 4th (I can't remember). He said, "Beth, if it makes you feel better, we just allocated X million dollars for our new website because we've outgrown it." Nice to know we are in good company.

<![CDATA[From Around the Shop]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/fromtheshop/ I joined Sea Bags in late summer/early fall as the marketing manager. I have learned a lot in the last few months about our products and the business. I am still amazed at the designs on our bags – they are classic, bold & beautiful.

As I looked around my office and out my window, I realized that Custom House Wharf is full of inspiration. How could we not make great bags? Our shop is in an old building that is a bit “settled” and sometimes not as square and straight as it used to be. We have a lot of artifacts in our shop, including: an old, wooden ships wheel, miscellaneous sail hardware, ropes, an old rusty sign hanging on the wall and of course lots of sails to be recycled. Looking out the window I see lobster boats, lobster traps, sea gulls and snow on the docks.Ship's Wheel and Pillow

We are lucky to be part of the working waterfront in Portland. Inspiration is all around us to make great bags. If you take a minute to look around, you might be surprised what you see. What inspires you?

So what a thrill when Captain Linda Greenlaw asked us to do some interior design on the boat, The Hannah Boden. Linda was taking the boat out swordfishing for 3 months and filming the Discovery Channel series, SWORDS! Lives on the Line. Many ofCaptain's Chair you will recognize the Hannah Boden from the movie and book, The Perfect Storm. What a test for us. We know sails are durable to all types of weather, and this was a challenge we couldn't refuse. We've often said, if only our sails could talk. This time its no different. See the pictures of our designs.

In the old days all fishing vessels were wind powered with sails, fun to bring some sails back aboard.
Bench SeatWe did a cover and repair job for the Captain's chair in the wheelhouse. Not sure what ate the arm off the chair to begin with. We covered the settee in the wheelhouse. We also did a little "nesting" for Linda's stateroom. We did a new mattress and mattress cover. We made custom roller shades for her windows. On the main deck we did a cover for the ice machine and a cover for the line drum. Thanks to Helen in our shop who tirelessly made it come together.

    <![CDATA[Numbers Make Us Unique]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/numbers/ number 3

Looking through our retail shop or online, a variety of numbers adorn our Sea Bags totes; we are often asked, why a 5 or why a 3?

So, what makes the #3 so special, other than being assigned to the Northeast? There are three (3) more days to bid in our new auction. Our first bag is from an Aqua Cat 12.5 Catamaran. Visit our auction and while you are there check out our new website.

<![CDATA[Make Your Bid for a Unique Bag]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/make-your-bid-for-a-unique-bag/ In our Portland store, we have a row of bags that we call our Wall of Fame. This is where we display our really special bags: one-of-a-kind items with unique stories to tell.

We think that all of our merchandise is special, because of the distance we travel to obtain used sails and the care we put into sewing each item. Still, there really is nothing like each bag on our Wall of Fame.

    Wall of Fame

These bags have not been for sale. Even so, visitors still ask all the time, “What will it take to buy that bag?”

This week, we have begun to answer that question. One by one, we will be offering these bags to the public through an online auction at our redesigned website

Our first auction item is a black-cat bag, made from the only Aqua Cat catamaran sail we have ever obtained. Right now, bidders are trying to outdo one another in $5 increments, to see just what it will take to buy that bag.

<![CDATA[What color is your cure?]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/What-color-is-your-cure/ Everyone knows we sell pink ribbon Sea Bags to support cancer awareness. Admittedly though, I’m not sure why they are pink?

While bubbly and pretty, I’m pretty sure we got it wrong.

Why not black–for the hideous predatory nature of this disease?

Grey–for the millions of questions still out there–and the incessant waiting so many patients and families have to endure?

White–for the pure bravery of those that fight or the color of those medical coats that tirelessly come in and out?

Recently a newspaper included a picture of our pink ribbon Sea Bag in a pink-washing article. By associating a picture of our tote bags with this article, they insinuated that we were in it to profit from cancer. Really? As I sit in the hospital room of a person who is one of the closest in the world to me; I wish it were true. I wish it was just about profits. I wish I was in the office counting all the money. Anything would beat this.

Would it be in poor taste to write “cancer sucks” on a Sea Bag?

<![CDATA[2010 Lobsterman Triathalon]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/2010-Lobsterman-Triathalon/ Next week is the 2010 Lobsterman Triathlon and Sea Bags is proud to be a sponsor!

    Date: Saturday, September 18, 2010

    Start Time: 9:00 am

Where: Starting and Finishing at Winslow Park in Freeport, Maine

    Distance: Olympic

As part of our participation, we will be giving the top finishers customized Lobsterman Tri Sea Bags. We are also giving away a special gift to the athletes at packet pickup, so make sure to come by and pick one up! (Find out what the gift is on our Facebook page)

Another cool thing about this event is that we’re trying out a new concept for customized Sea Bags- Race # Bib Bags! The athletes will have the option of having their Ty-Vec race number sewn on a medium tote or standard duffel Sea Bag- all of which are made from sails that have been around the world and recycled here in Maine. The recycled sail material used makes durable and washable athletic bags and allows the athlete to show their accomplishment with the race. To order a Race Number Bib bag, athletes can pick up an order form at packet pick up and then either drop their number off at our tent after the race, at the Freeport store, or mail it in with the number.

Hope to see you all on race day to cheer on the athletes and make sure to stop by our tent to say hi!

<![CDATA[Sea Bags Sails into Las Vegas]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Sea-Bags-Sails-into-Las-Vegas/ Most of the time when we spot a Sea Bag it’s typically near the ocean. So when we heard about our recent mention in Vegas Magazine we were super excited, but it gets better. We were included in a Best of Vegas article!

The article highlights the “Best of Sin City” from rock star jewelry to spas to restaurants. According to Vegas Magazine, the “Best Eco Fashion” can be found at Oya Eco-Couture and Sea Bags is amongst other great green companies such as Loomstate and EcoSkin.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas? Not when it comes to Sea Bags.

<![CDATA[Greenopolis Shares the Sea Bags Love]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Greenopolis-Shares-the-Sea-Bags-Love/ If you haven’t heard of Greenopolis you should definitely check them out. It’s a great website that’s focused on recycling, reusing, repurposing, waste-to-resource, and conservation. Through Greenopolis you can find businesses and organizations in your area to support, in addition to editorial-based articles on how to live your life in a more sustainable way.

Because we believe in what Greenopolis is promoting, we were thrilled to have Sea Bags written about in a recent article. Not to mention they highlighted so many of our products as suggestions for a Labor Day getaway! And what’s equally impressive is how many people shared the article through Facebook and Twitter. Thanks, Greenopolis, for the Sea Bags love!

<![CDATA[Customer Stories from the Sea Bags Freeport Store]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/customer-stories-from-the-sea-bags-freeport-store/ Sea Bags FreeportWhile it’s a pretty wet and dreary day here in Freeport today, the weather didn’t keep this old salt from visiting the Sea Bags store. Our newest friend, and her captain, sail their 36 Pearson up from Padanaram Harbor, MA each summer and have been visiting the coast of Maine with their 13 year-old black lab, Max, for the last 13 years. She had heard about the Sea Bags store in her hometown (we love how news spreads like that). She decided to come check out the place where we would eventually turn their old sails one day into something useful that also helps the environment as well. As much as they love the beautiful state of Maine, she loves her new Sea Bag that tells her retirement story equally as much.

<![CDATA[Sail Away with Sea Bags]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Sail-Away-with-Sea-Bags/ For some of us, this is the last week of summer already. Wow did it go by quickly! But we had a great one thanks to all of you. So what are you going to use for your last beach hurrah? We like Natty Style’s advice: “Sail away with Sea Bags.

We love the way she continues, “You’ll need the usual: a barely there sundress, your fave espadrilles – worn to shreds from a summer of fun, and a bikini or two. But you’ll also need something in which to tote these weekend essentials, PLUS a bag that’ll work for dragging goodies onto the beach itself.” Which, of course, is where Sea Bags sails in.

Thanks Natty Style for including us!

<![CDATA[Is there anything better than an outdoor shower?]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Is-there-anything-better-than-an-outdoor-shower/ We love summer! The fresh air, the salt and the ocean. Love to see the boats go by and really love a good outdoor shower. There is something so refreshing about the hot water and the cool air at night or cool water on those sticky days. Not to mention it’s really nice not to track the sand and dirt inside the house. We love these Sea Bags curtains from recycled sails we did for a customer on Isle au Haut. Where is your favorite place to shower outdoors?

<![CDATA[On the Beach with Sea Bags]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/On-the-Beach-with-Sea-Bags/ How many times do you read the magazines that are strategically tucked in the airplane seat in front of you? Well if you are flying United Airlines over the next month, definitely pick up the August issue of Hemispheres! You’ll catch our Anchor Tote amongst other cool companies. We are especially impressed with the beach toy set from Green Toys, which are made from recycled milk jugs.

We’ve seen Sea Bags used on the beach for carrying towels, books, suntan lotion and snacks, but they also make for a great bag to carry the kids’ toys. The sturdy rope handle allows you (or them if you’re lucky) to carry a ton of toys and perhaps the best part is that you can wash the tote when you get home and hang it to dry. It’ll be ready when you are to hit the beach again!

<![CDATA[Summer Fun at the Sea Bags Workshop]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Summer-Fun-at-the-Sea-Bags-Workshop/ We love to do fun things at our workshop on the wharf and recently Sea Bags hosted a booksigning for Linda Greenlaw. It was fun to move the machines back and have a crowd in here. We had a cast of characters that was anything but a normal booksigning. Linda had 2 marriage proposals, signed a baseball, and even received a hand-made pirate doll.

We also met a family that came from California just to see where Sea Bags are made. Food & Wine recently called our shop a “museum” for our designs and the crowd that evening was able to see it up close and personal. We love that and hope people will find their way down our wharf for an event or even just to say hi.

Don’t forget you can buy Linda’s new book, “SeaWorthy,” and our new Sword Tote for a special price $150 through our website.

The picture above is of Linda with Sonia and Alicia. Alicia is sporting the Stephanie Harmon for Sea Bags dress out of recycled sails.

<![CDATA[What’s your dream job?]]> http://www.seabags.com/blog/Whats-your-dream-job/ Oprah recently did a show on dream jobs. We want to know what your dream job is? I was lucky to spend the day with a French film crew doing a documentary on Maine. They clearly were doing their dream jobs–the quite famous host, Girard Klein was full of personality showing their viewers in France cool things about Our State. Every angle and shot was thought provoking. We shot my friend Kate, who owns Black Dinah Chocolatiers. Kate and her husband, Steve have built a great gourmet chocolate business living on the island they love to call home. We shot the Inn at Isle au Haut2 where Diana has used her amazing decorating and culinary talent to create a quaint Inn. I left a great Corporate Career to do Sea Bags with my business partner, Hannah. I was inspired by my sister, Linda whose dream job is to swordfish. I’m lucky to get to create a company where we work with amazing talent and we recycle beautiful sails into great, functional and sometimes funky totes. We give back to causes we believe in. I live in a gorgeous place, get to travel to great places, and love the people I work with from our team, to our customers and our vendors. Yep, its a dream job. What’s yours?

Beth Shissler, co-owner, Sea Bags, Inc.
