Fashion Friday: Rainy Day Fashions

October 21, 2011 10:10:45 AM EDT

Dressing can be more of a challenge when it's a rainy day. There are many things to consider, from the type of materials you can wear (suede being an obvious NO-NO) to staying dry without sacrificing style. Don't worry, you don't have to let the dreary weather put a damper on you, your mood, or fashion! Dressing well when it rains requires a little more planning and smart shopping. With the essential fowl weather gear, staying fashionable despite the elements is easy and fun.

First, I would recommend a great pair of rubber Wellies (boots). I can't think of anything worse than wet, soggy, socks and shoes. There are may varieties of rain boots out there to choose from. Though it may be temping to try a polka-dots, bright red, or hot pink pairs of boots, I would highly suggest that you resist this urge. Get yourself a pair of classic black, navy or hunter green boots that will go with a lot of different outfits.

Next Invest in a classic trench coat and/ or rain slicker. Again, I would steer clear of all the overly bright garb and stick to a classic khaki, grey or black that can be worn with a multitude of outfits. I would also consider yellow a classic rain coat color. Just keep in mind your usual apparel - if you are fairly sporty then yellow could really work. Remember, you can always add a second coat to your collection in a fun color if you find yourself using the wet weather gear frequently.

Finally, make sure your coat has a hood or buy a hat to keep the water off your face. A lot of people us umbrellas to keep the water at bay. If you are one of them, basic black is always the best color option. I don't usually use an umbrella, I find them to be more of a nuisance than helpful. Going umbrellaless is fine too....just don't forget to make sure your bag/purse is at water-resistant and can protect your belongings temporarily.

Fashion Fridays: Fashion Words of Wisdom

September 23, 2011 8:22:18 AM EDT

simple dress"Fashion shouldn't be about what is appropriate. Getting dressed is much more fun if it's about satisfying you." -Alexander Wang

I could not have put this any better. I can't stand it when people ask me or each other "What should I wear?" Or, "What are you going to wear?" Fashion is a way of self-expression. It is exploring your OWN likes and dislikes - the way you dress or adorn yourself should be completely about you and what makes you feel good and confident. It simply does not matter if someone else would or would not wear the same thing.

"Less is More." -My Own Mother

This is true is so many cases - in fashion and in life. More often than not people try to wear all top trends of the season at once, when really only one trend at a time will work. Too many trends can complicate the outcome. I find this to be especially true when getting dressed up....the simpler the better. If you have a beautiful dress you never want to take away from it with to much jewelry and/or make-up. So the more dressed up, more polished & put together I want to look the less extras I add.

"Wear what you like and what makes you feel good!" -Marc Jacobs

Follow your instincts about what looks good on you! Take some risks but always know yourself well enough not to stray too far from what makes you be you.

Style

"The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows & the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years." -Audrey Hepburn

Leave it to are beloved Audrey to put fashion in its place. True style comes from within, not from the objects draped all over the person!

Fashion Friday: Wedged In

May 31, 2011 9:56:16 AM EDT

Wedge HeelsThe statement wedge is a show stopping accessory that is a key piece for this summer season. These sky-high styles are offered in a variety of prints, metallics, rich textures and a multitude of color create a luxe yet laid-back feel.

Wedges, also known as platforms, are hot right now and are a permanent fixture in my wardrobe for many reasons. Though these types of shoes go in and out of style, they are surprisingly practical to keep in your closet for years to come. Often the platform itself is made of cork which is great for cushioning the foot and absorbing the shock when you walk, making these shoes much more comfortable and wearable then the average heel. There is more shoe with a solid base for the foot, which gives the wearer a lot more stability than regular high heels.

I would advise to avoid the wooden versions of the wedge, as they are not as comfortable. The best part of the wedge is once they go out of fashion they are still great even unnoticed to wear with pants. And for those of you that struggle to walk in the usual pointy heels these are they ideal heel.

Fashion Friday: Neon Nation

May 13, 2011 3:19:08 PM EDT

If you haven't noticed by now fluorescent colors are taking the fashion world by storm.  Like it or not, designers are popping these (not-so-subtle) brights into just about every fashion scenario. Some designers are opting to use small accents of the shocking hues, while others are hugely embracing the vibrate vibe - everything from topstitching to haute couture formal gowns.

Brights

The crazy bright colors are most often used for eye catching sporty apparel, but the traditional day-glow is recently exploding in a more lady like way. Nail polish, lipstick, jewelry, ballet flats or heels, bags, belts, ball gowns are all very feminine and all being seen in a new light.  Electric pink, acid yellow and flouro orange have been in the forefront for the season’s most popular neons.

The draw is that it is unexpected and it is just the ticket that can take your blah outfit into wow - in little to no time. This is such a fun trend because there are so many different ways to embrace it and anyone of any age can. Though the couture dresses are incredible; what I would suggest and what most of are budgets can swallow is to use the new neon in small doses. Paint you nails fluorescent pink, pick up a neon bag or clutch or slide on a pair of acid tone shoe these are the simplest and most successful uses of this pungent punk palette.

Mostly, just have fun with it! It may be a bit outside of your comfort level but it’s always a good idea to challenge your self. So go ahead and stick out from the crowd - you may find out that you really won't be sticking out all that much after all.

Jumpsuits... Not Just for the Easter Bunny

April 25, 2011 8:40:57 AM EDT

It was only a few years ago that the jumpsuit was among the hottest summer fashions & a "must have."  The jumpsuit, also called the playsuit or romper, is back and stronger then ever.  These  famous one-piece wonders are a great option for fashionistas looking for something to add to their spring 2011 wardrobe.

Playsuits are trending at the moment but are controversial because they are considered young &  unflattering on some body types.  For anyone that is willing to give this look a try, it is definitely a great one-piece (one price) investment
for the spring season. Now-a-days there are many more sophisticated and newer version of the romper with more flattering cuts & shapes. This is do in part to the innovative designs being produced by designers.  Overalls, evening, loose & flowy, tailored and, sporty are just some of the different variations of jumpers being offered.
The true beauty of a jumpsuit is its one step simplicity.  With this trend there is no need to worry and fret about pairing or mixing & matching different items in your closet.  You are able to just jump on in and go with your favorite accessories to make the perfect outfit. Belts, jewelry, blazer, clutch or tote can make the jumpsuit the best item in your closet.

Wouldn't it be nice if everything in life there just that easy?!?!
