The story of five red stars and why I believe in beauty pageants

Here in our Freeport store, I have observed a certain process that most people use when purchasing their own Sea Bag. Our store is small and personal. There is plenty of space to browse and a nice selection from which to choose. During the summer months, we receive new inventory every few days so the complexion always changes.

One day I noticed a peculiar sight. There were five medium red star bags on the shelf.  There are rarely more than a couple items of the same design in the store at a time because product moves so quickly and is replaced by more inventory arriving.

A family from ItalyItalian family was first in the store. They snapped pictures of each other near the shelves. Just when the mother broke from the familial cluster to begin “the process” of finding her Sea Bag, the red star caught her attention.

People don’t believe me when I declare that certain people gravitate to certain bags or that some bags look better on the shoulder of certain people than others. But it is true.  This woman was all red star.

She tried on –yes, tried on- a few obligatory bags. While speaking beautiful Italian to her family, she gestured for them to go to the service desk. In the spirit of full disclosure, I asked if she had seen the other red star medium bags throughout the store.

We lined up all the stars, like contestants in a beauty pageant, so that she could compare the texture, observe the unique stitching and check the sailcloth for grommets or patches. I told her every bag is different. They are all winners. After some debate, she chose the bag that best spoke to her.

At Sea Bags buying the right bag is serious business. We conduct “beauty pageants” (not usually with so many contestants) everyday when a customer needs assistance narrowing down the selection. First we decide the size then the design or favorite color. Then the bags are put in one place for the comparison and inevitably the customer delightfully chooses the bag that best speaks of character and design.

After all, you don’t just carry a Sea Bag, you fall in love with it. How did you “meet” your Sea Bag?
