Elmer Fudd called and he wants his hat back

From the window overlooking Bow Street, I have noticed that there is something going on with winter hats. We are witnessing a millinery trend that starts with Elmer Fudd and his hat. Since 1937 this eggheaded character has forgone fashion for the ability to untie the side flaps that protect his ears when hunting wabbits.

Wacky skiing hats are also popular on these streets of fashion. There is a love-hate following to these hats with spikes or wiry projectiles expressing the reckless abandonment and “look at me” attitude that allegedly one gets from downhill skiing.

Now the third element of my winter hat evolution hasn’t appeared in Freeport –yet- but has had an impact nevertheless: the Fascinator of the royal wedding of 2011. Remember the sudden fascination with these ridiculously fabulous Fascinator hats?

It is my belief that elements of Elmer Fudd, skiing, and Fascinators have combined to create the look that is now known as the mad bomber hat. Children are cute in the critter versions with little ears on the top and colored pom-poms on the end of the elongated earflap strings. On a retail website, the blonde model looks good wearing a silver metallic quilted version with “polyester satin lining and faux fur trim…Snap tab secures under chin.”

Other than these two examples, it is my observation that few people look good in this type of hat. But then perhaps, in the tradition of Elmer Fudd, appearance is no longer relevant. Could it be that style has been overruled by the practicality of keeping your ears warm?

I don’t think so either. It is about individual style. Even in muted colors these bomber hats are bold and demand attention. These hats are fun loving and whimsical. Looking good may not be a top priority, but the pay off is another form of creative expression. And let us not forget the well-earned head of hat hair once the millinery oddity is removed.

Forget the earmuffs and never mind head wraps. Now is the time to embrace winter freedom and let the flaps fall as the may as we marshal forward with warm ears. And, above all, this is a good way to guarantee that you won’t take yourself too seriously!

A View from Bow Street: Saying Good-Bye to Summer

October 5, 2011 6:00:27 AM EDT

There is no denying it. Summer is over. In Maine we don’t allow Labor Day or the start of the school year dictate the end of summer. We unofficially annex September and have been known to feel entitled to summer-like (albeit while wearing more layers for warmth) activities through Columbus Day weekend.  But that is pushing it.

Whisper light sundresses and shoulder baring blouses are being packed away. And it is just a matter of time before it is puffy coat season. Good-bye bare legs and sun-kissed cheeks. Hello opaque tights, lip balm and moisturizer.

It was a good summer. In Freeport we met so many friendly and funny people. Countless Sea Bags were launched from here on Bow Street to a life on the beach, service on the boat, or hauling at camp. We are told how well traveled our bags are throughout the world. Our bags have also entered the workforce by making the daily commute, carrying produce from the farmers market, or keeping track of library books or class folders. Each bag represents the best of Maine and reflects the unique character of its owner.

We enjoy four distinct seasons in Maine. So, as we bid summer adieu, we are gearing up for all that is good about fall and winter. But I have a secret to share on how to cope with short days and long nights come January or February. Use your Sea Bag. Yes. That's it. You will notice it is like hanging out with an old friend that conjures warm memories and the promise that summer will return soon.

Do you carry your Sea Bag all year?

Fashion Friday: Coat of Armor

September 30, 2011 4:09:03 PM EDT

The hottest coat trends for winter 2011 include bold color, dramatic prints, and beautiful design details. Weather you are looking for a new winter coat or just an alternative to your usual blah coat. This is definitely a good season to invest in that chic coat you've been longing for. Personally I love shopping the vintage stores they usually have an amazing selection of different coats and outer wear.

In fact most of my own coats I have accumulated though out the years; I have collected from vintage and used clothing stores. Going about searching for a coat the vintage way is not always the easily because it definitely takes a lot of time and most importantly determination. In the quest for a coat you should be looking for bold shades, unique prints, edgy cuffs, detailed stitching and metallic accents.

Most of us gravitate to the basic black coat that is way the easiest update is to add color. Don't hesitate to brighten up your wardrobe and your life by wearing a winter coat in a mood lifting color. Going bold with red, bright yellow, royal blue or emerald green means you should avoid overly ornate designs. Keep it simple and let the bold color be the focal point. So get out of those pre-winter blahs because winter does not have to be boring especially when you spice it up with a gorgeous new or new to you coat!
